I have the same gong, to me it's not gongish (unless hit hard) like everyone would imagine...if hit softly it builds to a nice dark shimmer...I don't think of it as a gong at all. Love it.

Awesome man.

I Have the same gong, and I also use the 28" wuhan wind gong too. I have recordings of both gongs here, for anyone interested.

www.myspace.com/peteythekidd

On the very end of "Daddy Baby Girl" I finish the song with a 28" wind Gong and on the beginning of "I put my heart" I wail on the 22".

Kudos man, you'll love it.

Welcome to the Gong Club,Drummerjohn! Aren't they cool instruments to have? I use mostly Paiste Gongs myself but I always see the Wuhan Chao Gongs down at Guitar Centre and I think I shall add this type of gong to my collection this coming year. They're insanely cheap and sound amazing.

Class A Drummer: buy one.

Fanagel: Maybe the reason your gong doesn't sound very "gongy" is because you are striking it in the centre; for a more "oriental smash sound" hit the gong midway between the centre and the edge.Smashing it in the middle creates a "bong" sound with less spread, hence the need to hit harder.

I love my gong, Probablly one of my greatest drum purchases.

I wanted a Paiste Symphonic like Bonham, but twas a bit expensive.

I got my 28" wind gong in!! Wow, this thing is cool. I was shocked at the thickness of it. It sounds very good. I too wanted a paiste, but I can't fork out that kind of cash for a use once in a while item, and these wuhan wind gongs are cheaper than dirt. Now I can buy more cool stuff.... MUWHAAHAAHAAHAA!! Err... I mean Christmas presents for the kids.......

It sounds great. I haven't really beat on it too much, just the couple of wacks on the center, and mid point between center and edge. I can't wait to get it set up with the kit. I ordered the gong cymbal stand adapter at the same time, it works well, but if I try to extend the boom (convertible stand) off center, the weight of this thing makes it very unstable, In the straight stand configuration, its stable, but awfully close to the stand. I'll have to use this setup while playing to see if its going to be an issue or not. I wacked it good to see if it would hit the stand and it didn't, but I wasn't in 110% mode either, so I'll have to see this weekend when I get together with the guys.

I ordered mine through vintagedrums.com. Around $150 for the 28", $99 for the 22".

That looks cool, I've never seen it before. Yeah the gong doesnt move too much, but you may want to get it further from the stand

And I'll post some pictures of my kit with the gong soon

If I want it to be gongy, I'll make it gongy...Oh yea, it'll be gongy... but what I really LOVE is that dark building shimmer.

I'm actually using a 22" Wind Gong like yours as a flat ride right now. It's pretty ghetto, but it sounds really nice.

I don't know if Bonham would but I think I just did....I never tired of seeing the classic Bonham/Buddy Rich 1 rack 2 floor set-ups. The gong gives this kit added gravitas...

im too lazy right now to read through all the replys to see if someone allready mentioned
but i think its a tamtam no gong !
since your talking about the sound beeing so weird , a gong has a tuned tone . a tamtam dosent , tamtam gets used in orchestras allot instead of a gong too get some unique sound .
really cool instrument !

Those bass drums are either really deep, or of a small diameter!

What are the dimensions of those things?
