Default Drummers' shoes thread!!

This is the official shoes thread!

What shoes do you wear when playing that get you the best feel for the bass drum?

post pictures and/or links to your favorite shoes to wear behind the kit

I like to go with Puma Speedcats

i used to play in my bare feet... but one day i came to band practice with my work shoes on and i forgot to take them off and started jammin' and i was like whoa... these shoes are great!... i think i like them so much because they have a lot of grip... they're just some type of new balance shoes that i bought for work so i wouldnt slip around on the butter that got on the floor (i worked at a movie theatre).. and i love playing in them!

Puma classic Suedes. Light and flexible.

They look better than the wrestling/driving shoes and they don't make you look like a hillbilly. (Which is what playing barefoot makes you look like)

Ahem, I meant: "In my opinion, they make you look like a hillbilly" ;)

I've found Chuck Taylors (on the advice of Jojo Mayer) to be really excellent drumming shoes. Slide technique and various other foot techniques are very easy to play in them. I can play comfortably barefoot, with socks, with mountain boots (I went through an experimental phase), light soled trainers, thicker soled running shoes, Doc Martens, Sandals, but nothing has ever quite been as comfortable or consistently good as my Chucks (black, low-top).

Knevil, those are the same shoes that Thomas Lang wears right? I like his... they're red. In the videos at least.

Actually, they're just the basic Puma classic "Suede" sneaker that's been around forever. I've seen Lang's shoes and I believe he mentioned that they are driving shoes. If you look on Puma's website, they have a section for Motorsports so it should be in there.

My problem is that I have extra wide feet and I can't get the Pumas in wider sizes. After a few hours of playing my left foot (apparently it's a little bigger than my right) starts to hurt. I was recently diagnosed with fallen arches and now I've got to start taking better care of my stuipid feet. I need a sneaker like the Puma that I can get in a wider size. Light, flexible and with some decent support. And cool looking too, can't forget that.

Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe I'll check out the Chuck Taylor's.

Gene Hoglan plays in Doc Martens. I tried it once and came back with a healthy respect for his ankle strength.

SANDALS! then you get to see my pretty toes!!

Nah just kidding.

I like playing barefoot most. Partly because I'm so accustomed to it when practicing at home. But for shoes, I love any kind of flat soled shoes. I think they help me with the heel toe a little...

wow...didn't think I'd be getting this many responses to my wierd thread..

I've heard good things about playing barefoot, but for one, it's often cold, and it really doesn't look all that good...

the reason I LOVE speedcats is because they're really thin and light, so it's like you're playin barefoot, and they're immensely comfortable for walking anywhere

plus they look awesome with jeans and anything else, but I don't really want to get into fashion taste (that's for another thread at another time)

Note: very similar to Thomas Lang's

I've been playing barefoot ever since I can remember. I wanna try socks, then shoes again to see if I've been doing it for the right reasons. I started having the problem of the pedals getting slick and hard to double, so I picked up one of the Grip Peddler from a local shop and tried it out. It helped out alot! Anyone else ever tried these?

Adidas Chile 62's

They have a great grip on them for bass pedal work! Not so great for slide technique though...

8 Ply rubber chest waders work for me. I can keep extra sticks in the chest pouch within easy reach and when the beer and tomatoes start flying I always stay clean and dry!!

Sorry guys..and (girls) I just can't resist. Really tho... I never thought much about what type of shoes I should wear while playing. Don't really like barefoot though. Seems like I have to put much more force into the kick and hat pedals and it really throws me off on timing compared to regular tennis shoes that I'm used to.

I use invisible shoes = bare feet. After all, I don't put mittens on my hands to hold the sticks. hehe

Knevil, I feel you on the wide feet. I have short, but very wide feet so finding shoes to fit lengthways can be a real pain. The Chucks are great shoes but if it's hot my feet swell and rub the sides a little so I've had a couple of small blisters. I really like them though.

The Pumas look nice too though, have to consider the pricing of these things. I thought our friend Gene played with New Rocks.. even bigger. But you have to respect those ankles.

Just lately it's been Emerica Heritic 2's, before that I was in some Circa's (I forget what they were) and before that I've done most brands of skateboarding shoe, flip flops, bare foot, socks... just about everything. I don't find it makes a great deal of difference to my performance what I wear on my feet. Strange really.

Wear shoes while playing drums? Thats absurd. =P
I wear my socks when playing drums, or if I'm not wearing socks at the time I just play barefoot.

I really haven't noticed a difference in my playing whether I'm wearing shoes or not. I just play in whatever I'm wearing. I'm not an experienced double bass player, but i'm working on it, so maybe i just dont know, but I haven't had problems whether I'm wearing shoes or not.

I don't like playing barefoot. I found some Nike shoes made for watersports. Agua Socks. They are slip on, thin rubbery sole and very light.

I'd pay to see that! Heck, I'd even stand in line... I'd have to guess that you don't see much difference between heel up and heel down playing, though :)

I almost always play barefoot... I did pick up a pair of driving shoes, though, that I may give a try.

i play with what ever shoes i have on, unless they are boots... any tennis shoe really works good as long as it has grip.. but i have noticed that my new Macbeth London II shoes are really well adapted to playing.. i get alot of good feedback from the pedal... the grip works wonders on these shoes.. so for now id go with them, but i do love the old adidas classic world cup series shoes...
