Default Cymbal painting discussion

i have a really old percussion plus set as my practice set in my garage, and the other day my friend gave me his old set of ZBTs for my practice set.. so i took off my old hats and looked at them and noitce they were PAPER thin, i mean these things are reaaaaaaaally thin. so i cut them with some tinsnips and it went from 14 in. to 8 1/2 in. now, i was trying to make a splash but it sounds exactly like a china, there is almost no difference. this is fine with me because i wanted a new china anyways haha. but i had a question, they've been sitting in a humid garage for about 8 years and theyre a bit rusty and have stick marks all over them. i got the rust off with some car rust remover but i want to give em a new paint job.. will a couple of layers of paint change the sound of them?? i really want to keep them this sound but if it will change the sound then i probablly wont paint them.

also my friend said i should put rivets in it.. should i??
thanks.. peace

personally I hate rivets but that's just my personal preference. Once you've drilled the holes though obviously there's no going back :) So choose wisely

Painting will change the sound of a cymbal. It adds weight and will deaden higher pitched frequencies.

Wish it worked like that. More likely it'll just sound dead.

Amen to that. I'd hammer that with a fork.

Default Painting/coating cymbals - slipknot '04/'05 tour

Does anyone know anything about painting or coating cymbals without effecting the sound of the cymbals. i.e. joey jordison's white paiste for the '04 and '05 tours. Any help or direction would be more than appreciated.

ive seen some threads about this, and i started one too.

you just cant paint cymbals just like that. it'll lose the sound of the cymbals.

the paistes are powder coated, if memory serves me right. the only way to get your cymbals colored is powdercoat them if you know how, or just buy the paiste ones.

you actually dont have a choice, really. you have to buy the paistes.

Even powdercoating is adding a layer of something to the outside, and additional weight. It will dull the overtones and responsiveness of a cymbal.

powder coating is what paiste does, ive heard. but how they manage to keep the cymbal still sounding decent is another thing..

Well i do happen to have a paite lying around. i though powder coating would be the way to go. I got the thing for 40 bucks and it sounds like crap. (not a paiste fan) I might just have it done and see what happens.

we're sure these are powdercoated and not electroplated?

i would think that even powdercoating would kill the tone. Does anyone have a pic of these cymbals?

electroplating wont produce let's say.... green or pink or pure white or jet black.. like the old paiste colorsounds (?) have... if its not paint its gotta be something else, so i bet its powedercoated. ive seen the black ones. i saw them in a music store lying around. the color coating was damaged. it was a pretty thick layer, kinda like half the thickness of car paint [just the actual color layer], if not the same thickness. and yes, im sure it was a paiste. it says so.

Regarding Paiste ColorSounds...from what I've heard, these cymbals weren't very popular, because even the laquer coating that the company applied "deadened" the sound somewhat...

Default painted cymbals

I was wondering how did J. Jordison made his cymbals white or Terry Bozzio made his cymbal black?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3jAK3r9vLc
Can you spray paint them or what??

There are already a couple threads on this.

The cymbals you are talking about are Paiste ColorSounds. They were sold in the 80s with little following, however you can order this special 'paint' on your cymbals through Paiste's website.

You -can- technically spraypaint your cymbals, but they will sound awful afterward. I wouldn't suggest having Paiste paint your cymbals either, it dramatically decreases the sound quality.

as far as i know you cannot paint cymbals, the vibration would surely take the paint right off, plus hitting the cymbal. the rich drummer have a way of doing it, i would guess by getting the cymbal manufacturers to mix coloured materials with the metal when its in liquid form

ok ignore that, lookjs like kung foo answered while i was typing
