Default Slingerland 1966 Jam Session Pawn Shop Find

Ran across this on Craigslist at pawn shop. Made them a ridiculously low offer of $200 and they took it. Put new heads on the kick and tom and have been playing it today. Sounds great. Bass is very controlled sound. I put an Aquarian II batter on it. Of course it came with an old pillow inside, it and what looks like flakes and remnants of the owners herb stash from 50 years ago lol (no extra charge).

Looks like a Slingerland Jam Session. Date stamps inside shells are Oct. 1966. The snare/kick/rack tom all match.

Sizes:
20x14
12x8
14x5.5

The 16" floor tom doesn't match the rest of kit. Jam Session model didn't include a floor tom, and the lugs are different. Same wrap but different model tom. I think it's a higher end model than rest of kit.

All the wood is perfect on every shell no separation no issues with plys. Bearing edges are all good. These are thin shells with re-rings. There is no separation between shells and rings. The original mufflers are intact and functional. Wrap is 8+ out of 10 just a few scuffs on bottom of kick.

Kick has consolette and cymbal mount, but no cymbal arm. The kick hoops are metal and I don't think they're original. I'll be shopping for a silver sparkle inlay set of wood hoops.

Very nice find. I miss the days of the pawn shop finds. Those deals are getting harder to come by.

Wow that's great. If they took 200 they must have gotten them for next to nothing. That's excellent for you though.

Here are pics of kick and toms. The kick and rack have stamp "P" inside and date Oct 66. The floor tom just has a "P" stamp inside shell. The floor tom also has a different nomenclature serial number.

Well, as that generation grows older and passes on, the next generation's pawn shop finds will be things like 1980s Pearl Exports, Tama Superstars, or Yamaha Recording Customs ;)

That would be weird in the next 20 years.

No. Please no. Maybe some RCs, but they'll probably be lipstick red or hairmetal white. Would it kill someone to pawn off a nice set of piano gloss black? I wouldn't mind a few casualties. Just a few. I'm not a monster.

The classics are that way because people do't let them go. You're gonna be stuck with all the weird colors nobody wants.

$200 for that kit? Oh my God. Do pawn shops not even know how to google drum prices? Itís worth at least 5x that, probably more.

Usually it's the exact opposite: like $1,200 for a used Gretsch 3 piece Catalina kit lol.

I'm sure you're right about that. Original kit was the Jam Session, and the floor tom was added to make it a 4 piece. Having split lugs instead of center lugs, is the give away.
Slingy's in the used market, don't command the price that Gretsch, Rogers, or Ludwig kits get. While $200 is a steal ..... eBay is full of Slingerland kits with $1K and up asking prices, and they just don't sell. Great drums, but they don't enjoy the popularity of the other three American labels.

You lucky duck. I had a kit of similar vintage, I think mine was a Krupa Deluxe. Fantastic drums, and I miss them dearly. Only the snare drum remains.

Really? I thought any of the American sets in good condition from the mid-60s were worth at least 1K.

Nice find.

BD hoops aren't original obviously, but I'd rather have those metal ones than the original flimsy wood hoops.

Yup they are metal and not at all original. I have some shiny black lacquer generic maple hoops I will probably use. Also snare badge is missing, and no date stamp in it. Just a faint barely discernible P if I squint and use my imagination. The floor tom didn't have a date either but the P stamp is plainly visible it it.

Here is a pic of kit set up for practice today. I changed out heads and played it today. Love the tom and bass. Snare has that 60's woody re-ring thin ply shell classic sound. I love the internal muffler it eliminates ringing and lets the shells sing.

I am really amazed at the wraps. No lifting at all. This kit was played it had well used non-original heads top and bottom. Whoever owned these took good care of these drums.

Put shiny black lacquer maple kick hoops on today. FYI the second tom is a Gretsch Catalina 12x8 and snare is also a Gretsch Catalina.
