Default Rick Beato -- Is the man!

Been watching Rick's series "What makes this song great". While it is song centric and covers all of the tracks, it does feature some drum specific conversation..

Steely Dan example:

Take a listen and tell me what you think.

Listened to the Steely Dan one, very entertaining and informative. Its awesome to be able to listen to isolated tracks like that and really break the song and parts down. Purdie sounds amazing isolated, of course. Police next....

Great post

Great post
I was watching the SD episode, and it occurred to me....

This guy is a much better armchair guitarist than I am. I guess I need a better chair now.

The Pearl Jam episode is amazing...

I wish I had the ability to isolate tracks to learn songs during the 60-80s. I just kept listening to a song trying to decipher what the drummer was doing-often I complicated the heck out of a song only to later in life discover when video came out and you could see and hear the drummer was doing something completely different from what I thought. Some I discovered were so simple-yet the sounded so complicated-I was flabbergasted. Rick is a phenomenal guitarist-I like how it breaks it all down. It'd be nice to see a drummer break down songs like that-yes there are plenty of videos of drummers showing a lick or pattern (like Jeff Porcaro and the Roseanna shuffle or Purdie showing his shuffle), but they usually don't break down the whole song. But I love, as a guitarist, he is giving a drums a due appreciation in the song.

Just watched the Police vid. Man this guy is awesome, he points out so many little details that you hear but may not really pick up on. Must be fabulous to have that level of musical knowledge/awareness.

I just watched his video comparing harmonic structures and elements of Holst's Planets with Williams' Star Wars. This guy really knows his stuff!

I just watched the Police one.
Great details, although I disagree with the description of the verse as a G Lydian mode. I've always heard it as D major, just moving from 4 up to 7, finally reaching chord I for the chorus.
I feel that the song simply swaps between D major and D minor, which explains the Bb and F chords in the bridge. Still a great analysis though. If he was one of my students I'd give him an A grade.

This guy is terrific. His depth of knowledge is impressive. The kind of guy you want producing your record.
