Default Getting a band together to tour Europe

Has anyone ever just threw a band together for the soul purpose of just getting to tour across a foreign country?

My brother, who is an established drummer from an old punk band from the 90's, has his new band with members from that old punk band, is going to tour Europe and asked me to get a band together.

Throwing a band together under that set of circumstances for an overseas tour is asking for trouble unless ALL of you are good friends and, crucially, know you are going to get along well together for the time you're away.

How long is the tour for?

Two BIG things that would concern me.

1. Will everyone be getting paid enough to take time away from the other things they do to earn a living for the duration of the tour.

2. Who will you be playing for? Most tours are based on supply and demand. Unless this band can pack in the venues you will A. be playing to empty rooms, and B. likely have a difficult time getting venue owners and bookers to put you on a bill. An unestablished band with no following is a hard sell.

While the idea of touring Europe sounds like a blast, I'm thinking that a brand-new ad hoc band is not the way to do it. Way too much opportunity for too many things to go too wrongly.

The only way I see this working out for the best is if your brother's band (old or new) has enough of a European following to get the bookings, and you happen to have three or four guys on speed dial with whom you've played and gelled for some years, all of whom can take a few months off to chase the dragon with you. And that sounds like a compound 'if' if ever I've heard one!

This sounds like a "here hold my beer and watch this" moment....

I think there are 100 different ways this can go and 98 are bad.......BUT.....you only live once.....

If you do this, please vlog it and I'll grab the popcorn.

Will be touring Europe a lot this year (along with the US, Mexico, Brasil, Chile, Columbia, Russia) With my Punk Band "The Varukers"
We have been constantly touring now for over 30 years.
You will need to be supporting an established band that will pull else, you will find it hell I'm afraid.

Sure, I've done several. I'm a little unclear on what your brother is wanting you to do-- put together a band for him, or put together your own band to tour with him as an opening band? What I did on my things was bring one player, and then use whoever local I could scrounge up-- people who were recommended to me. The European guys became my regular players. It's helpful having people over there because they maybe be able to help with logistics, and help book gigs. dk if that helps or not, based on what your brother is proposing...

I think it's another one of my brothers dream big ideas. He wants me to get a band to open for this new band, which is gaining traction because of the contacts they have from their prior band.

I told him I'd just go on tour with him as a merch guy. I would like to get a band but it wouldn't be for the right reasons. Also, the kind of music they play isn't music I even listen to, so I wouldn't want to start a band along the lines of that, it would be selfish of me.

I saw a poster with you guys on it in a hallway of a practice space in Oakland (OMC). Recognized it right away.

Rock on!

Not sure when it went up, but I actually meant it's still there. It's right next to our lockout rehearsal space for one of the latest projects. I assumed either you played with a band who also rehearses there or you guys were rehearsing there for a bit or something.

Did you guys play Stork? Not many punk bands pass through here without playing that little club.

I'll come see you anywhere near Oakland or SF!

And yes, I'll take a pic of the poster with my phone next week when I'm there.

We played the Cornerstone in Berkeley in May. The flyer could be for that gig?

Frosticles & Dr. Watso, please take the discussion to PMs. It's distracting from the OP.

Calm down, bro. I don't think the damage is permanent. It was a short side discussion and it's not likely that it will derail the thread since it's just the two of us.

Besides, and back on topic, I thought it was already established that throwing a new band together to fly overseas and play with zero fans is a fairly stupid idea. At least try a short domestic tour to see if you can even stand these people and their daily habits.

I agree. Life is too short for moaning ;)

As Mr Watso says, Topic has been answered :)
