Default Sharing stuff here makes me forget...

That there are actual internet trolls out there.

I posted a picture of my kit elsewhere, and while the purpose was to see the kit, I get this guy telling me a Shure SM58 is the last thing heíd let near his kit, let alone in a bass drum.

Of course, being flippant, I tell him he must not be an audio engineer, since we both donít know each other and what we do, and WOW - got the standard textbook response of insulting my set-up and how heís recorded all over the world and NOBODY heís worked with EVER uses a SM58 to record!

I had to check to see if I was either standing on plastic or in a Guitar forum.

Iím sure Iíll get a ďlast wordĒ statement from this moron after I told him to take his ďIím a Pro and know better than youĒ gig somewhere else. But after being here on Drummerworld for years and sharing stuff - you forget there are those internet trolls out there in cyber land.

I probably shouldnít have egged him on, but people like that deserve it. And it was fun.

So, just know if anyone here does that to me, and I just push your buttons even harder, that I love you ;)

Too true. Through my participation on other sites/forums, I've discovered that I'm a talentless homosexual whose mother has performed unspeakable acts with practically everyone online.

Not sure how each site/forum develops its own personality, but I suspect it begins with the owners and moderators. And for that, I'm extremely grateful to Drummerworld.

Well, Bo, to be fair, I have played in basements all over South Jersey, USA and even recorded on cassette tapes a few times.... And Me, Myself, AND I, have NEVER put an SM58 near our bass drum either! (Of course I have never OWNED an SM58 so......)

🙄

It's like I tell my wife when she asks why i don't like to go out much-"I LIKE being home!"

It still blows my mind that people will just go off on people online, but you know theyíd never do it face-to-face. The internets are cool, but it has bred these little hermit trolls like thereís no tomorrow. If I ever do that, someone here can just shoot me.

So the internet has helped a number of humans find that extra energy to just waste being online morons. Sad.

I hear ya; I’ve been there, too.

My day job is commercial photography, and at the dawn of digital imaging (c.2000) photography forums went from nerdy darkroom chemistry to chips & software. At first there was good decorum with negligble troll activity, but by 2003 it was clear: most amateur photographers are little bitches.

Over the last decade some of the best, most informative forums were shut down due to excessive trolling. The admins couldn’t handle it.

One active forum regularly suspends accounts via blocking IP addresses. When Trump was elected I thought it’d melt their servers. Any and all conservatives left or simply suspended their right to freedom of expression.

But drummer forums such as this one? Maybe one snark in a million posts. Maybe less. And for that I am very grateful.

Edit: When Brexit occured, our fellow members across the pond were so polite on this forum I thought I’d misunderstood the gravity of the vote. I asked questions and made my opinions known and was never once trolled or had aspersions cast my way.

Sorry, I really don’t recall posting that.

Iím so sorry that this happened to you, Bo! People think they can hide behind the curtain of anonymity on the internet, but it really just exposes who they really. DRUMMERWORLD, by far, has to be the nicest online forum Iíve been on bar none! Unfortunately, trolls and people with bad attitudes find a place to hide and lurk everywhere. Iíve had great experiences here, and will definitely stay here for a while.

PS, that guy must not know much about mics. If he did, heíd know that the SM58 is almost identical to the SM57. The 57ís have been used practically every way under the sun, Iíve even seen emí used as overheads!

I wasnít even gonna get into the microphone differences - I was initially talking about having my little room up and running again and the burgundy snare mixes in well with the black-ish sparkle. For the most part people were cool. Iíve since deleted the thread and blocked this particular person. Iím not gonna let the thread become a cesspool. But yeah, if you canít have an intelligent conversation, then stop everything and go elsewhere.

No, not with a Beta 56. Now, an Audix D6 might get you there! ;)

Bo, try using a 6.5mm f/3.5 lens to shoot everything!!

It's the best type of lens out there. You'd be totally insane to use any other lens to shoot any subject ever again! It's always been the best kind of lens out there. Now don't try arguing with me, because you know that deep down I'm absolutely correct about this.

You'll thank me some day!

No, youíre WRONG! The best lens, by far, is the Canon 5200mm F/14 Mirror lens. Too expensive, get a better job. Too heavy, youíre too weak. Need to shoot in low light? Night photos SUCK, and no REAL photographers such as MYSELF shoot at night. Iím a really famous photographer, but you wouldnít know any of my work, itís only published in FINE ART magazines. Need to shoot portraits? Just install the lens in the right spot miles away and have the subjects stand in a designated spot. No REAL photographers use any other lenses than this one, and if you do, youíre a hack! ;)

I only really read this and one other drum forum (a drum manufacturer whose kit I sold years ago but there's some good stuff on there) and I see a much larger percentage of threads there degenerate into slanging matches than I do here.

Don't get me wrong, there are good guys over 'there' but this forum feels friendlier, and often better informed as it isn't associated with one brand in particular.

Iím pretty fed-up too. I deal with the public in a technical field (I do phone and internet work for a major telco), and the public can occasionally just be ridiculous. Add in to that my kids and my wife and another jackass family member (my birthfather), and I just canít take much criticism before I start preaching or something. Everybody is under so much stress and so rage-y anymore.

Part of me wonders if, historically, humans have always been rage-y, and having the internet just allows people to show it more, and even give people the 'ok' that it's all right to do it in public to people. Before I ventured to New York City, people would tell me that New Yorkers are always yelling at each other, and I totally found that not to be the case - people were rather pleasant in person there. Can the stress be that bad to some people?

I think I'm a pretty easy-going guy - what if I'm not and I bring it out of certain folks? That would be weird.

I’m a big guy and a generally nice person, so people have always been nice to me. I did troll atheists back in the day on Yahoo and AOL, but it was amusing to me to debate atheists and piss them off. I’ve never trolled people over gear though, that would be silly.

Troll
verb (used with object)
  1. to sing or utter in a full, rolling voice.
  2. to sing in the manner of a round or catch.
  3. to fish for or in with a moving line, working the line up or down with a rod, as in fishing for pike, or trailing the line behind a slow-moving boat.
  4. to move (the line or bait) in doing this.
  5. to cause to turn round and round; roll.
  6. Obsolete. to hand around, as a bowl of liquor at table.
  7. Digital Technology. Informal.
    • to post inflammatory or inappropriate messages or comments on (the Internet, especially a message board) for the purpose of upsetting other users and provoking a response.
    • to upset or provoke (other users) by posting such messages or comments.

Troll the damn Reyka, you bogart!

A Shure SM58 (or SM57 which is the same mic minus the ball shaped screen) is a great mic that just works in pretty much any situation. That guy was uninformed. They're the ginsu knives of mics.

I wasn't even gonna get into it. Long ago, there was an artist who tracked an entire record that went gold with a single SM57, which again, it's the user, not the tools. But I wasn't gonna waste my breath explaining that. I was too flabbergasted by the initial response!

I'm moving on.

The anonymity enables the rageyness. If there's no benefit to having a good reputation, you can do whatever you want without repurcussions. So yeah, I pretty much agree wtih you. Of course, empathy goes a long way (if you have it).

I also agree with you about the people of NYC!

Pearl drummers forum has found me a few of em lol. One guy specifically targets my post to lip me off.

Have had a few on YouTube as well.

I egg em on, because most of time I am right, but it's really not worth my time or effort. It's like arguing with a drunk. Nobody wins.

My latest is egging them on for about 10 posts, getting them right fired up, then thanking them letting them know every comment and view brings my video up in the YouTube algorithm. Most of the time that ends the conversation very fast hahahahah

I'm too tired to argue about anything. Some people seem to thrive on it.

I've gone through my Facebook and unsubscribed to anyone who posts anything political...even if it's stuff I agree with.

Can the stress be that bad to some people?

I think I'm a pretty easy-going guy - what if I'm not and I bring it out of certain folks? That would be weird.
One thing I have discovered is that overstressed people, meaning here people who cannot manage the pressure, tend to view people who do manage to keep their shit together as lazy underacheivers.

Two of my ex bosses and now one of our employees are like that. If you look calm going about your business and delivering on time they either are jealous of the way you handle yourself or think you have not enough on your plate so you too can look like a freaked-out rabbit out in the open surrounded by hungry wolves.

A good advice with theses types is to act even mellower which freaks em out twice as much.

I always knew that you were a Holy Man, dude.

There's something in your, uh, in your avatar's demeanour that just reeks of spirituality.

And of course, you have the divine respect of the gear.

It's a sign.
