There are no drums on the original recording...

If you want to add some maybe try a just bass drum on 2 and 4, like a sparse reggae beat, with some 16ths on the hihat maybe?

Thoughts....

Shaker....cowbell\agogo bells...(occasional) bass drum or floor tom hits...(very sparse).

Shaker will be the most important element...

alternatively-brushes (VERY light, you want to stay out of the way).

Acoustic guitar is carrying the rhythm.

I am not sure (or experienced enough) to know what Brazilian\South American type of rhythm it is...bossa nova? samba? but maybe study up on some South American flavored stuff that has percussion in it to get some ideas.

Fun tune, wish I had a better way of explaining what I am hearing in my head to go with it.

My thoughts after listening to it would be to just follow the first two or three notes of the bass guitar on your bass drum with a soft mallet.

Or, if you buy a cuica drum just for that song you could screw around with it and play the bass drum with your foot.

Played this for years in a band, listen to the live in central park recording with Gadd......I copped that feel and approach, worked well. Once it clicks, it clicks...

Funny, I had the same trouble with this tune. Do what River said, watch the Gadd video. It took me a bit to get comfortable with it and I tended to rush the hits on me and julio down by the school yard. Relax!!! when playing.

Thinking back, and playing that tune in my head as I read this thread, I would also throw out the thought of not being afraid to add space, don't feel the need to fill the each bar with "stuff"......more specifically don't feel that it needs a busy hihat pattern or a ton of crap with your right hand.

The groove can be pretty laid back and in the pocket and the important parts are the starts and stops (tacets) and coming back in strong on those to lock in the band along with using additional voices on the kit, bell of cymbal, toms mixed in with snare for 2 or 4, etc.

I found leveraging the bell of the ride on the back third of the tune really locked in the groove and got a good rocking feel and kept the dance floor jamming every time we played it.

Just my random thoughts from memory on that tune.....
