Default I just survived a stroke!

So this may be slightly off-topic, but just out of care for you folks I post this. I had a close brush with death last week..
I was seated at my desk while working online when my son in the next room said I was talking "funny" like I was drunk (but not). I keeled over and he immediately thought to call 911, the ambulance came and the fire dept. brought me to the local hospital emergency room.
Turns out I had a stroke! 53 yrs. old Crazy stuff. Very scary like a fly being swatted down to the floor.. that was me.

Never had any signs of ill health up to now. Turns out I was a bit of a walking time bomb. The bad cholesterol known as LDL had surged and it was the cause of a blood clot on my brain.
Thanks to the quick thinking of my college age son and the expertise of the paramedics and hospital staff I woke up on the sunny side of the dirt today.

Watch what you eat guys, it will eventually catch up to you.
Years ago the old-timers liked to say "you are what you eat."

Stay healthy so you can keep on swingin' and rocking my fellow drummers!

You are correct on watching what you eat (which I must do better as well). Here's to many more years behind the drums!

Just curious. So you missed the regular (yearly or so) blood work that would have told you years ago the LDL was getting elevated?

What do normal humans say to someone when this happens?

Congratulations? Condolences? Best Wishes? Those all seem kind of off...

Jeremy, that sucks man. Glad to hear you pulled through. Take care of yourself.

The way we treat ourselves does eventually catch up. It happens so slow that it's hard to really understand until something drastic catches you.

Live clean!

Wow = not good at all, but relieved you were lucky enough to have someone intervene. Such events are absolutely life changing in terms of our outlook going forward. Stay well Jeremy, but don't let it consume you - live your life.

Here's to a speedy recovery!

My singer suffers with mini strokes (TIAs) and he's in his mid 30s. I used to work on a Neurological ward for patients under 60 and without going into detail I've seen some heartbreaking cases.

Get well soon dude!

What a scare that is. Relieved to know you're alright, JB.

A childhood friend of mine suffered a stroke in his 20's, and never recovered.

Take care of yourself.

Glad to hear things are on the upswing !! I survived what could have been deadly scenario last spring. Abdominal aneurysms in my aorta and both internal and external iliac arteries. All fixed now I'm happy to say. :-)

Your son was nothing short of heroic in this case. We can't be losing any members of the Sonor club in here seeing as I just joined it recently! Best of luck to you and stay current with the Doctor's orders.

Cheers,
TW

I would also like to say props to your son for not hesitating and making the call right away. I had just watched a TV show where a 4 year old dialed 911 because her Mom was really out of it. She told them the street name and that it was a brown house. The phone info of course was tracked by the 911 computers, but the main thing here is that if you have youngsters, show them how to use 911. It's a little more envolved now since many people don't have hard lines, but most smart phones will allow 911 without logging into the phone. Your child could save your life.

Good advice. Show them on multiple phone types how you can almost always make a emergency call without access to the phone. Land lines will soon be a thing of the past and internet connectivity only.

Thank you for reaching out Polly!

The only sensation was my face starting to droop and dribbling my drink down my shirt.
I simply keeled over after my left side gave out, picture Pinocchio's strings being cut and gravity drops the puppet to the floor. Same scenario just a six foot tall version of that! no injury from the fall due to my sitting at my desk not standing up.

The drumming community sure is a special one. Thanks everyone!

That's sure a close call. I just recently started taking blood pressure med. It's been creeping up there little by little. My bad cholesterol is higher than it should be, but not drastic. My Dr. wants me to take stattin drugs, but I'm totally against them. She told me with high blood pressure and high LDL I'm a prime candidate for a stroke. I went on a high fiber low carb diet a few yrs. ago and that lasted about a yr. I need to get back on it. It's really hard to eat right. I wish you all the luck in the world my friend. Get a annual health screening too.

If any of you folks are familiar with the Starving Musician chain of stores in the SF bay area ,the drum dept manager of the Santa Cruz store (Stretch)was on stage a few weeks and had a heart attack.

His ex knew CPR and managed to keep him alive until the EMS made it there.

He had a bypass and seems to be recovering, but keeling over on stage?

I guess if you gotta go ,it would beat the hell out of a hospital bed.

I was just at the Berkeley store last night and overheard one of the staff saying that he never really heard any Motorhead.

I said he should be fired on that alone.

Unfortunately the conversation was spurred by our loss of the last surviving member, Fast Eddie, who just died.

Awesome PSA Jeremy...

... while I didn't have a stroke... my cholesterol build up broke loose and blocked 90% of one artery and 80% of another.

According to my heart specialist, my high cholesterol has probably been a life long build up. I knew it with my yearly check up and got prescribed Atrovastin. That worked miracles and my cholesterol levels became acceptable, instead of off the charts.

But... I still had significant build up. My stress test 5 years ago DID NOT detect it. But I did some extreme hard labor one day in my backyard and my doctor thinks that's when the buildup broke free and blocked my arteries... not enough for a heart attack, but significant signs (burning pain up my left arm during simple walks). Because the symptoms suddenly appeared.

Talked to my doctor, he knew something was wrong, sent me to the hospital for a stress test and they knew in 5 minutes. I was in surgery 45 minutes later and done in 15 minutes. Yes, they inserted 2 stints through my wrist, up my arm to my heart. I watched the whole thing on the screens.

So my PSA would be the follow-up of completely changing my diet. Doing exercise... and the right amount. Not to much, not a little bit. And changing my work situation of sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day. With Stress being the highest contributor to heart failure. I had very little stress. But I do have a history of cholesterol.

Guys... and gals... Pay attention to what your body is telling you. Go see your doctor regularly and talk to him about any changes.

Glad you are doing good Jeremy. Again, thanks for the post.
