Default Are your drums worth more than your motor vehicle?

If you added up the cost of all your drums&cymbals, do you have more invested in them than in your car? Or in furniture?
(Bermuda I think we know the answer for you)
Mine is about equal, and I don't have too much.

Are we talking total dollars spent on drums and cymbals vs total dollars spent on the car? Or are you talking total dollars spent on drums and cymbals vs current market value of beat up crappy car running on its last leg? If its the former, I'm way below in my drum spending vs car spending. If its the latter, I'm way above on drum value vs car value.

Oooh, good question. I have wondered on more than one occasion just what my whole collections of drums and cymbals is worth. I bet I have a few thousand but nowhere near the cost of my truck. I just bought it a few months ago. Having a kid was a wonderful excuse to buy a bigger truck.

Well, not looking for exact dollar figures (that's personal) and its not meant to be a contest.

My hypothesis is that most drummers invest equally or more in drums..... for the passion reasons. I gladly drive pretty much a beater, and would just as soon as shop for new/better drum stuff (which I really don't need) than a better car (which I also don't need).

If I added up every penny spent on drum gear in the past 35 years, it wouldn't add up to the cost of my car, and I don't drive anything special, nor have I.
1st drum set complete with cymbals = $350
2nd drum set with the same cymbals as above =$600
3rd drum set with new A Customs =$1,500
4th drum set with XS20 cymbal set, three blocks, cowbell and Axis pedal = $700
Added new set of HHX Evolutions last year for $1,000 and sold XS20s for $400 to fund the purchase, so $600

Total $3750 in 35 years. Not tough to beat that with a car!

Value now, or value when purchased?

I drive a 1990 Corolla, in decent condition, so probably worth between $800-1000. My Sonor 2001 would be worth probably $400 or so now. My rock cymbal lineup would probably be about $800-1000. So yeah, that by itself is probably worth more.

If you count price of new, yeah the car would definitely be worth a lot more. Probably looking at $8000 for the car and $2500-3000 for the drums/cymbals.

For a long time my drums were worth more than my 1957 Morris Minor, but I've said goodbye to that car now and bought a new Skoda, which is worth more than the drums.
But if I include some trombones, flutes,a sax, piano and guitars then it gets close.

Gosh good question but then that get's me thinking how much I've spent on weed and booze since I was like 16 and I realize I could buy a really nice kit and a nice car-maybe two of each. Holy crap just rough estimates put me in a new house too.

There was a time when my music gear was worth more than my car---30 years ago---when I realized I wasn't going to be Bonzo or Jimmy I grew up, and changed my priorities---I know it sucks, but there is no place for real musicians in modern "music"

Well, at this point in my life, it would be "are they worth more than the CARS that you've owned?"

Probably, yes. But, not being a car guy, it's easier for me to buy a car for a purpose, and the drive it into the ground and get another one before the decade is up. Whereas with drum gear, I'm looking for the elusive silver bullet (which I've since given up on for the last 20 years or so). And of course, there are drums you just have to have as a collector and fan of drums.

I guess that if I sold off all of my drums and cymbals, I'd probably get double the amount of money that I'd get for my car. Sadly my current car is a high mileage 10 year old Ford Fusion 1.4 diesel (generally referred to as a Bingo chariot here in the UK) - probably worth about 1,000. Here in blighty it looks like some pretty ominous clean air legislation is on the cards where diesel drivers are likely to be charged a daily fee for driving into many British cities - and I live in central Plymouth which has already stated they intend to introduce 'diesel charges'. Pretty soon I will probably be able to boast that my drums and cymbals are worth 1,000 more than my car...

We drive cars into the ground in our family. I just got rid of a 1995 Honda Odyssey and my current production vehicle is a 2016 Ford Transit Connect cargo van.

Drums & cymbals would fall short of what I have in my Ford Transit Connect.

But include our piano, guitar, (ahem) accordion, and all my drum mic's in the mix and it would be close.

Inspired by Bermuda, I made a database of all of my gear, partly for inventory, and partly for insurance purposes. Every single piece.

Way, way, way more than both of our cars. It's surreal.

But then if I sold all of it, assuming I'd get what it cost, and bought an expensive car, I'd not be nearly as happy.

Yeah I know... If we had enough garage space I'd have kept the Morris, but I really needed a modern car which could I could lock securely, had seatbelts, proper brakes and steering, maybe even air conditioning.

So we've bought his and hers Skoda's - these have the biggest boot space I've ever seen. I can fit an entire drumkit including hardware, cymbals, stool and a trolley all in the boot, out of sight.

On a related note - A friend of mine bought two Steinway grand pianos which were worth more than his house!

The insurance company made him get bars on the windows and put in extra fire alarms before they would insure the 'contents'.

My drums? Hell no.

But my modular synth is. :)

Just for details: I drive a 2012 Peugeot 207 (probably worth about $6K today), spent about $1000 on each of my two drum sets (plus another $1K-$2K in assorted percussions and electronic drums - not counting drum machines), and own a $12K synthesizers.com modular synth and a $5K eurorack.

I also own a 2015 Honda CRV (wife's car) that I "borrow" for gigs. That one's probably still worth more than my modulars.

Yolanda and her cymbals and hardware cost me about about a grand less than I paid for my van in 2009, which was $12,875. Granted, I got a fantastic deal on my van, a Ford E-250 with only 9,000 miles on it. (and fully racked on the inside!) I basically got it for half of what the same vehicle would have cost me new. 2009 where I am was really tough financially. They couldn't have made much on that deal, $1,000 maybe. And that was a major dealer.

What's "fully racked" Like shelves inside? Is that your elec work van, and same one you used to leave your drums in?

i think I've misjudged people's expense on drums. Lower than I thought than from the 'new purchases' thread.

I was expecting this to be more like a cyclist's forum, with bikes far exceeding most enthusiast's cars, so I'm quite surprised too. Not hard to do with road biking though. bike=$5000, bib shorts=$200, shoes=$300, etc. and that's if you go cheap. Wish I would have bought drums with that cash when I sold my stuff and hung it up, but got a stupid car instead! LOL!

Yea, I made the term up on the fly. It sounded good :)

Yes, shelves and cabinets inside. I still have the same van. The E-250's will easily go for a good 500,000 miles if maintained.

This is a loaded question but I'll play along. Since the question is of "worth" well it's really a matter of what other people think its worth. Now I own a DW Collectors, so the vast opinion here is probably no, not worth as much as my car. On the other hand my car has depreciated considerably, while my drums have retained there value, and in some instances even appreciated. I think the bottom line is that without my car my drums wouldn't be mine. Cars got me drums. I wish drums would start getting me cars.

I guess it depends how you tally drums, and assuming worth is basically fair market value

My best kit with cymbals? No
My "B" kit with cymbals? Still no
Those with my breakbeats? Still no
Those with my snare drums? Still no
All of my shells, hardware, and cymbals? Probably close
All of my acoustic gear plus ekit, definitely close, if not more
Add peripherals, like mics, IEMs, certainly more.
Add in computers, interfaces, outboard stuff, power amps, PA gear; then the scale is really tipping.

Total spent on drums, maybe. But my current kit is worth about 3/4 what my car is worth.

Value: guns > car > drums > guitars

Now, my drums (and cymbals and hardware) plus my Roland TD-30 and E-cymbals are probably worth more than my car.

My last car, anything was worth more (hundred dollar pos)

Current car? Nope. Not even close.

I don't own much that's spendy, and my current car was 6k. Needed something reliable and hauls stuff.

The answer was yes until Sunday.

Some lovely person in a 7.5 tonne truck wrote my car off a couple of weeks back. 12 physio sessions coming my way and the fun and games of dealing with insurance companies.

On the plus side I got my hands on an ex police car which I get Friday. It's already been christened the blues mobile. Cost more than I paid for any of my kits.

Feel like a class traitor now :)

Cars I own or cars I drive? I have a company car that I drive daily that easily beats what I've invested in drums. My little 2001 s10 pickup however, that's a close call.
