Default drum lessons over skyp

Yes or no?
I've seen quite a few offers for that on here and on several other classifieds and even music schools/academy pages.

I'm a bit sceptical that skype can cover technique for something as intricate as drum playing. The angles necessary to really see what the hand is/should be doing seem to be something that is not easily covered by a webcam.

Even guitar, which is quite easy to have an interestingly complex guitar lesson over the wire, has it's shortcomings if you are trying to look closely at your picking technique.

What say you?

Done it multiple times with two teachers: bass guitar w/Adam Nitti and drum with Bill Bachman. Not as good as in person, but more intimate than i supposed. I was surprised how the personal instruction deviated from the website videos to fit my needs.

Drumset would be a different story, but i could shift viewing angles easily around the guitar and practice pad as needed.

Eh, if you really want to learn something specific and know of an expert on that subject you can't physically get to, I'd say consider it.

Most of the time, though, I think it's important to put in the time/effort and really interact with the teacher. There's a very real disconnect over a video session and not to mention crappy laptop or desktop microphones might have issues with drum playing.

There are minor limitations to skype vs. in-person, but not being able to see isn't one of them-- for me. If I need to see something I can't see, I ask the student to move the camera.

I think it's usually better to work with someone locally-- you're not just learning drum stuff, you're forming relationships w/in your local music community-- but if there are no good teachers nearby, or if you want to learn something special from a specific person, skype lessons are perfectly fine.

I take lessons over Skype, no drumset though, only practice pad, and I think it works just fine, you can move the webcam if your teacher needs to see some other angle. Not sure how it works with a full drumset but I guess it would be the same as long as you don't have a lot of rack toms in the way! I rather have a good teacher over Skype than a not so good local teacher.
