Default Carter McLean w/ Charlie Hunter Trio

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6d0...em-subs_digest

As usual, Carter brings the groove, feel and chops (the latter always applied very sparingly & musically, IMO). And, all of those sounds and textures from just three drums, two cymbals up top, and some fun percussion. Interesting how he manipulates the sound of his snare throughout the set with a dampening cloth and tuning changes. Among so many other things, this is a first class lesson on how the drummer brings the sound to the drums.

Okay, I'll stop gushing now. ;-)

Listening now Jason. Carter uses a pretty bold choice in his bass drum sound. Most guys tune so they DON'T get that tone.

WTF is the deal with the wacky angled frets on the guitar? HTF does that work?

Gotta love the camera placement too.

It's a way to maintain an even temperament across a wide range of string diameters without having to push the string tension above/below playable levels.

It feels fairly natural to play. Bends can be uncanny at first..

In that setting, the bass drum is musical and appropriate imo. I like it, but would likely toss in a t shirt just to calm it down, though I do like the sound he,s going for.

I'm not 100% certain that the Gretsch kit he's playing is his.

Yeah, I don't get the frets on that guitar. How could that not change what note you get at each fret on the different strings compared to a guitar with straight frets?
