That genre must be like jazz, branches everywhere. I never considered the Eagles Southern rock. Ditto with Tom Petty that Wiki lists as part of a sub genre. ????

Nice to see Atlanta Rhythm section get a notice. I put the pioneer of Southern rock the Allman Brothers Band top on my list. Though I'd argue the Allman Bro and to some extent Atlanta Rhythm section aren't really Southern rock but more Rhythm and blues bands. Admittedly Dickey Betts did have a lot of country flavor. However his influence became more prominent after the deaths of Dwayne Allman and Berry Oakley-which ended the real Allman brothers band IMHO. I consider Lynrd Skynrd, Marshal Tucker, Molley Hatchet, and .38 special as Southern rock bands-and in that order come think of it. Listen to "At the Filmore East" and tell me they are a rock band.

Ok, I'm confused... what is 'Southern Rock'? All these groups mentioned I've always called Country Rock. I've heard the term Southern Rock, but I just thought it was describing where the band originated from. Because I'm not hearing a similarity in sound from these artists.

Hi Macarina. It's about the guitars with the emphasis on lead or multiple lead players. Most of the drummers used big concert kits fat snare and boxy sounding toms. Simple big tom fills and a open feeling with the base player in most cases. The lead singers were not the best but, they fit the song with their voices not like say Alabama or The Eagles. Not a lot of back and forth harmony's also. Most song were about hard drinking, playing and loving and they played like it. IMO guitars players top of the list for Southern Rock. They all have same feel and somewhat sound style.

I agree with you. None of the bands that I listed sound anything like any of the other bands on the list. It all comes down to people's desire to catagoize things. The reason I like these bands is that they play good music, period.

My favorite Southern Rock groups:

5. The Alabama Shakes

4. R.E.M.

3. Mother's Finest

2. The Drive-By Truckers

1. Lynyrd Skynyrd (Spell it right, fans).

Couple of notes: If we were naming our favorite California bands, there's no way we'd restrict ourselves to surf bands. In the same way, this list shouldn't only cover groups with three guitarists who wear cowboy hats or started in a particular decade.

Random thoughts:

Wishbone Ash did well in the South because of the twin lead thing.

It took that long for some one to put up Blackberry Smoke. Sheesh.

These guys do so many things that I just hate but I saw this and for some crazy reason I love 'em.

Black Stone Cherry

I'm kinda surprised the Doobie Brothers haven't made it to the list yet. Despite the lack of percussion their song "Black Water" continues to be one of my all time favorite songs.

1. Lynard Skynard
2. Doobie Brothers
3. ZZ Top
4. Allman Brothers
5. Charlie Daniels

Likely because they originated from the San Jose - San Francisco region, not geographically 'southern' in the USA.

Good point. Course I've never viewed geography as a good indicator of musical taste/style. I've lived in rural Amish country most all my life yet I've become very found of Big Band and combo Jazz.

Luckily music crosses all the stringent boundaries of geography, class, religion and ethnicity.

I think when the musical genre is defined solely by geography, it's hard to argue for bands from Northern California.

Now, there are plenty of great surf bands from Idaho or whatever... but the Doobie Brothers were to Southern Rock what Taco Bell is to Mexican cuisine. Still tasty, but not the same.

Maybe my definition of Southern Rock is a bit more geographical...
Southern Culture on the Skids
Dixie Dregs
REM
North Mississippi All Stars
ZZ Top
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Pantera
Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit

Sorry, couldn't limit it to 5.
