Default What will happen to your gear, when you pass?

Hi everyone. My question is, what will happen with your gear when you pass? I was told to make out a Will and Living Will. My wife said it's up to me and that she would just want some sticks and some old kick heads with my initials on them ( i am also going to write a note for her on the heads now). I am going to leave one kit to a local High school and one to a local small Collage that has a very good jazz program. Both said that they were pleased and have said yes. I have enough cymbals to cover both also. Just wondering what others plan on doing if they can not pass down their kit to a loved one? It would be a shame for the kit or kits not to be used as we used them for their enjoyment for us and others.

My drums will probably sit and get covered with dust. In reality, my cymbal set is worth less than $1000 and my drum are worth less.

If my family wants to sell them or give them away, it will be their choice.

Excellent posture on that young man! He must have a good teacher.

As someone who works in the death care industry for my day job, my advise to you all is to have this conversation with your spouse/kids/friends sooner rather than later. If you're a miserable type with legal kin, look into getting a friend as your Financial power of attorney.

I have asked my wife to sell my drums and cover the cremation costs. Anything extra can be used to cover expenses of the service. I'm sure there are a few pieces that the kids or someone may want too keep.

Yes he does, I got super lucky and found a great one. My little man is going through the same regime I am,

He should be good to go by the time he realizes girls dig drummers ;-)

I have an ever-evolving "Letter of Instruction" (part of my living will and trust) where I specify where certain drums and cymbals are offered first, and the rest will be sold with the help of some key people in the business (who'll get a percentage in cash or at least first pick of gear.) In some cases, I've stated minimum values for the gear. My wife will have a nice chunk of change when I go. :)

It will all be cremated with me and dumped into my old fishing spot in Ellicott City Maryland , in the Patapsco River. All biodegradable.

My son will get it all to do with as he pleases. Except my wish is that my Guru drums must stay in the family. I don't think he'd ever sell them anyway.

I'm sure it will be auctioned off by Sotheby's, along with the rest of my vast empire.

Or

The wife could sell it for wine money at a yard sale along with all my Home Brewing equipment.

When I go someday, hopefully not for a long time, my drums and other music gear are about the last thing the wife, daughter and grand kids will be concerned about getting.

I've set up a family trust fund.

I have a file listing what everything is worth and a few sources interested in purchasing or who would help facilitate selling items.

I've provided a list of recommendations for "wise" donations (parties that will appreciate and care for the gear) in the event items don't sell.

After seeing my latest health insurance premium, I figure I'll have to sell them way before that point just to pay for extending my life a day or two.
Of course if I'm suddenly gone, my kids can have them. Then they can get a username and get on Drummerworld to donate them.

Something to think about???

I guess my vintage Slingerland kit goes to my younger brother.

My Magstar kit maybe I donate to a kid who loves the drums but can't afford to buy his own.

My Yamaha kit, maybe sell to help fry me 😳

My Littlebird kit, use the 10" tom for my ashes?

All joking aside (and that's difficult for me as I am known for being a jokester), I don't wish to appear maudlin. Due to ill health, the end is probably not that far off for me. I have been divesting a lot of my stuff to good homes who I know appreciate them. I have two kits left that I use for teaching. One goes to my grandsons. The other, when I am no longer able to play it, I will probably sell. I still have a lot of stuff to get rid of, bongos, snares, stands, cymbals, etc. I'm listing them as I can. Some of the stuff I have a hard time parting, but I will eventually every thing must go. I need to find a good drummers garage sale but there are none in the area. Sorry to darken your day. I will try to be lighter in the future.

I'll probably leave the kits to a church or to a deserving young musician.

If any of my kids get end up playing, I'll give my nicest kit to him/her. Same goes for my guitars (acoustic). Same goes for my hammered dulcimer.

My wife can probably sort it out better than me. I'll leave it all to her, and she can do whatever she wants. Or, I may have a heart-to-heart with the kids, will everything off to them all at the same time so there's no confusion, and let that be that.

No clue. None of my kids are interested (Lord knows I've tried). Around the house, we have a couple of drum kits, several guitars, a bass, and a couple of cheap amps. Beyond occasionally picking a guitar up to strum, there has been no interest in actually learning to play.

I suppose they'll be sold off by my wife.

Maybe I'll buy a miniature drum kit and have my ashes put inside for posterity.

Both of my kids like the drums but I think the youngest (3yo) might actually become a good drummer, so he might want to keep one or both of my drum sets.

My synths, on the other hand, will hopefully be sold quickly to aid my wife. Selling my modular synths, in particular, could become a temporary, profitable second job for her.

But I'm coming back as a better drummer so I will know. But those in the know will not know that I know. My screen name will be GRUNTERSREINCARNATE. Unfortunately I will have to give up my status as Mayor and Moderator. I will look something like this.

My drum room is the least of my crap they'd have to get rid of-I recently already gave most of it away-but I'm rebuilding. Over the years I've collected a lot of laboratory stuff in my basement. Microscopes-dissecting scopes, analytical scales, glassware, a glass still that I would make triple distilled water for tissue culutre-and a time or two made some moonshine, etc. I use to perform some research at my home because the HBC I worked had little space. If I were a diabolical man I could likely get in a lot of trouble ;) Then I use to be a big gun enthusiast and hunter/fisherman so got tons of junk (fishing stuff, guns, gave away reloading stuff and gun powder etc) there too-also some stuffed animals I stuffed (I took a taxidermy course when I was kid and stuffed a bunch of birds)or collected (some my Dad's) -though I've given most of them away (it's a southern culture thing and my Dad was a Big game trophy guy who traveled around the world stuffing game for his big trophy room he added on to the house. He never took me. We still have a bunch of his stuffed game to deal with as now both my parents have passed. I gave my Mom's baby Grand piano to the orchestra I use to play with. My son-in-law and son-in-law to be both are drummers so I'm not too worried about that-but I don't know what they will do with the rest of my junk.

I am going to bury them somewhere safe......I will come back as a drummer.....hopefully at some point in my second life I will have a vision and head out with a shovel and the rest will be history....

That is my loose plan.......I'm still working some kinks out of it.....hopefully I have time........

A few select [expensive] pieces can be sold to help out my wife, which I have documented for her, and the rest can go to schools, charity, churches etc.
