Default Question about drum measurements

I am having my drums shipped down and need to buy cases. However I don't know the exact dimensions of my drums. I will have my dad measure but i don't want him removing the heads and rings. Approximately How many inches do you think I need to subtract to account for the heads and rings when measuring the depth?

Thank you

As a very rough guide, measure between the top edges of each hoop then round down to the nearest inch. e.g. if the measurement is 10 3/4", it's a 10" deep tom. If you want to be more accurate, take that hoop edge to edge measurement, then measure from the top hoop edge to the head, x that measurement by 2, then subtract that from hoop edge to hoop edge measurement.

When measuring depth for cases, you don't need to be very accurate. Case manufacturers apply a fairly generous tolerance to allow for different hoop forms, etc.

This may not apply to your drums, but if you have any toms with a RIMS Suspension Mount you'll need to factor that extra diameter in the overall measurement.

Some case manufacturers note which cases will fit your size tom with a RIMS mount.

FYI: Drum bags will be more forgiving of RIMS mounts/suspension mounts and sizes than hard cases.
