I had it in my head that it was going to be Simon Phillips. I should have put money on it...

Fabulous.

You and me both.

Damn it. If I weren't buying a new house this year I would definitely allocate the funds to make the trip across the pond for this.

Even better, Simon Phillips is added to the Drummer Night full band extravaganza on the Saturday night. Just so much to enjoy, I don't even know where to start!
It's a great lineup and the Saturday night show (and Sundays lineup) is making me very tempted to make the weekend of it and stay over Saturday night.

Was planning to get a very early train up to Manchester Saturday morning then head back to the station after visiting the show about 6pm to do the journey home- but not so sure now!!

What to do....

Wow Andy, this is a ridiculous lineup! I can't imagine an event has ever taken place featuring this many headliners; it's quite an achievement. If you don't mind, I'm curious to know what part you've played in making this happen?

Really wish I could make the trip over for this to spend the weekend bathing in all the drumming goodness. If it weren't for previous commitments, I would.

Dear David and Liam have booked their hotel in Manchester. I know what I'd do, if I could prevail on dear Mr Madge, but there really is only so much drummy stuff the poor man can take :D

To think that I probably know half a dozen places in Manchester where the folks would house me for free, and they all know how I like my cup of tea... but I'm not able to go during that period!

Here's wishing all those attending a great time!

I'd be happy to try and suggest the best places for a good pint or your favourite alternative tipple, but I haven't actually been "local" for quite a few years. I'm sure you'll manage anyway!

Day-umm.

I can't believe I'm attending, pinch me.

I wish I could video record the entire event, but I want to enjoy it while I'm there.

I'm looking forward to the after party :)

Knowing Andy is a pretty good thing :) :) :)

I've just found out about this, I've not been around much lately. It looks great on the web site, lots of great players on the main stage.

Who else is going?

That crazy awesome lineup, plus the fact that so many of my UK friends are displaying there caused me to commit to make the trip. I'll be the guy that talks funny so say hello. I won't have a booth but Carl from AD has been kind enough to let me house a few Dynamicx snares in his booth.

Gerald Heyward wow!

He used to work at my local GC. He sold me a Yamaha snare stand. What a humble guy. I've seen thousands of people line up for this guy in London at the 2013 LDS. Around me it's a shame because customers don't realize who he is. He's only the guy pictured in the DW cardboard cutout advert in the store.

IDK it's kinda like Vinnie working at your local GC.

Surreal.

Can't wait for this now. Booked my travel up to Manchester earlier this week.

Due to something now happening on the Sunday it's a (very) early train up then a train home mid evening on the Saturday. Gives me 8 or so hours at the event which should be enough to take it all in.

Looking forward to seeing you all.

Andy you really should have a man in the back of that truck with a few double barrel shotguns like they do with the armoured cars lol. What a motherload of Guru drums! Holy crap on a cracker.

On another note, my plane leaves in 9 hours. I'm leaving in 5 hours for the airport.

I have major butterflies. I could probably fly there myself with all these butterflies.

Christmas coming early I see Larry. Did I mention I was envious and I think "I loathe you" in my best Grinch voice. Nah (who loves ya baby-swirling a lollipop and in my best Telly Savalas voice) wishing you safe travels and the best trip of your life-it's kharma from giving all those drums away you get a trip of a lifetime. Did I mention I was envious hee, hee, hee.

Looking forward to it. No idea what my 2 friends will make of it not being drummers, but they seemed to want to come for a day out.

Are we allowed to take photos? Trying to decide whether to take my big SLR camera, or not bother and just enjoy it. Hmm.

Hopefully traffic will be good, 2 hour drive if totally clear from Leicester.

Doesn't quite compare to Larry's journey though ;-)

Non-drumming Mr Madge didn't hate it when he came to LDS a few years ago. Yes, there's loads of gear that non-drummers won't care about, but there'll be plenty of new friends to make, and that's the absolute best part.

Not sure about the performances although I'd think so. Anywhere else, yes, including the obligatory DW group photo at the Guru stand!

No question an epic lineup. I attended the 2008 Modern Drummer Festival Weekend which featured Simon Phillips & Protocol, Ndugu Chancler, Will Calhoun, Billy Ward, Thomas Pridgen, Bill Stewart, Gavin Harrison, Todd Sucherman, Dafnis Prieto and Derek Roddy. As Simon, Gavin and Todd are my favorites, that lineup was as good as I've seen.

I'm not going to steal Andy's thunder, but I'll give you a quick low-down on my UKDS experience yesterday. (I'm afraid I've gone a bit flaky today and won't be attending.)

Hooked up with Andy, Larry, Alex Amedia, Caroline, Ben, Jon, Liam and dear David, most of whom I haven't seen since last year so it was so good to catch up with them. Duncan was sorely missed :'( There were also a number of people I'd met previously at MDS, whom I've kept in touch with via FB, and it was great to see them again too.

Saw Thomas Lang (absolutely fantastic, of course), Dennis Chambers (what a privilege), and Emmanuelle Caplette who was the artist that I and a couple of other friends enjoyed most. My admiration for her is boundless and like the fangirl I am, I asked if I could have a photo with her and like the generous person she clearly is, she readily assented.

In the evening there was THE most amazing concert. I'll let somebody else give the "cast list" but it was headlined by Simon Phillips. It was absolutely fantastic, I can't imagine where else you'd find so many world-class drummers on the same stage. The concert was a fundraiser for the Teenage Cancer Trust, and there was an auction of a one-off Remo snare that had been autographed by all the artists who were performing - which dear David won! He'd better not leave that on the train ...

From my point of view, it was a much better do than any of the LDS I've been to. The venue was excellent and far less noisy than Olympia - you could have managed without earplugs if you'd had to - and there was lots going on - almost too much, if there can be such a thing.

Great day.

Well, what a great day yesterday. Really enjoyed that, according to my watch I walked over 10miles which explains my sleepiness today...(that or the beer on the train home)

Good to see familiar and new faces and lovely to catch up with you all. A great line up in names and brands, well worth the jaunt up north and I'm jealous of everyone attending day two. What a great event. Well done to all involved.

Larry, really lovely to spend more time with you and I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip. A real pleasure to see you again, you're an absolute gem. Hope those stones continue to work their magic! : )

Mark_S, really good to meet and talk with you too. Hopefully see you again and talk more.

I really did think that 8 hours at the event would be enough but it absolutely flew by!! Wish I could have spent even more time with everyone but I feel very grateful for the time I did have with you all.

Drums

In terms of gear naturally the Guru stand didn't disappoint. The drums as always are a work of art and as always a treat to inspect them in great deal and play them, without trying to drool too much. I didn't really play much as I spent most my time talking but I did had a quick play on a massive George Way Kit kit but another standout for me was the Sonor Vintage kit, I couldn't tear myself away off that kit, lovely. The Gretsch Bell Brass Snare was pretty interesting also, very loud.

Cymbals

I fell in love with. A 22" Sabian HH Vanguard. Wow. Also like the Paiste 14" Swiss Hi Hats, interesting effect Hats.

In terms of haul I came away with an LP Click Hi Hat Tambourine only but I'm happy with that as there was a vintage 1930's 14x7 Radio King which would have gotten me in serous trouble with the other half when I got back last night. Avoided a few weeks in the dog house by talking myself out of that!!

Went to the Dennis Chambers event and it was a massive thrill to meet him afterwards and have a quick chat and grab a photo with him in the exhibition hall. Also loved the John JR Robinson clinic, groves for days.

What a day, roll on the next forum meet up.

Awww...such a lovely photo!

Thanks to both of you for the run-down! I'm looking forward to more stories and photos!

I could only manage the Saturday, but what a great day!

It was very full on, literally going from one event to the next. I got there late unfortunately and missed Thomas Lang :-(

This is also why I didn't first meet up with other forum members at the start; I meant to but I had to rush straight into Jost's clinic, and then it was non stop from there. Plus I'm as shy as anything so it always takes me a few minutes to work up to saying hi to people I've never met!

So, I got to see Jost Nickel, Dennis Chambers, Tommy Aldrige, Emmanuelle Caplette, Craig Blundell, and JR Robinson.

Tommy's clinic was the only one I needed ear plugs for! Woo, it was loud.

They were all great; my favourites of the day though were Jost Nickel, Emmanuelle Caplette and Craig Blundell.

I've been a big fan of Emmanuelle for a long time. It was surreal to watch her play live what I've watched on YouTube for years now. And I now finally know she is playing paradiddles on "from the satellite"! I keep wanting to try and learn that as a project (I'll report back in about 20 years, haha).

After it was all finished I finally plucked up the courage to say hi to Andy, and then Juniper and PQleyR turned up and we all had a little chat. Great to meet you all at last!

My presence isn't exactly big on here, but you all politely nodded when I said my name which I appreciated :-)

I'm sorry I didn't get to meet Magenta and Larry :-( Hopefully another time!

PS, Magenta, great photo with Emmanuelle! I wish I had said hi to her, though I probably would have come out with gobbledygook.

I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you too. DEFINITELY next time.

I actually don't know how I managed to get any words out to Emmanuelle. I said some of the usual rubbish she must get tired of hearing. That smile, though, and the way she giggles to herself when she's playing out of the sheer joy of it <3 <3 <3
