Default Joe Travers & Terry Bozzio - Zappa Plays Zappa

Has anyone in Europe had a chance to catch any of the Zappa Plays Zappa shows yet??? Anybody in the US planning to go later this month? I REALLY wish I could afford to trek to the other side of the world to catch one of the gigs...

I wonder how Terry managed to ration his kit down to only about 17 cymbals? :P

Dweezil was probably too cheap to pay the freight for the full S.S. Bozzio!!!

Dang.
Just checked the tour schedule ... yet another show that's not coming to the Pacific Northwest.
Bummer. Woulda been cool, now that my band has decided to take a stab at a couple of his songs.

I went to the show in Philadelphia last night, and what a show it was!!! The band ruled and Joe Travers played drums very well. The first set was just the band and then after a short intermission, Terry Bozzio came out and they did I'm So Cute, Trying To Grow A Chin, and Punky Whips. Then came the Black Page and it was completely amazing and Steve Vai came out for the second movement of The Black Page. Get this, Terry Bozzio had ONE BASS DRUM. Anyway, anybody planning to go see the show is in for a real treat. Also, if you are going and the set list stays the same, I suggest that you familiarize yourself with the Roxy and Elsewhere album since most of the songs they played that night were from that album. Some of the songs played were Peaches En Regalia, Let's Make The Water Turn Black, Inca Roads, Florentine Pogen and Trouble Every Day. Also there was a duet between Joe Travers and Terry Bozzio at the end followed by a duet between Steve Vai and Dweezil.
To sum it all up, this is a great show and is well worth the price of admission, plus it is really long to. In Philadelphia, the band came on at about 8:30 and was done at about 11:45. Great show, Bozzio rules, Vai rules, and Napoleon Murphy Brock is great. Dweezil put together a great band and a fantastic show.

Great show in Chicago. Joe Travers' drum set sounded very good and he played the opening set very well. Then Terry came on stage as expected but man, I didn't expect Terry to sing right off the bat! (I'm so cute). and I really didn't expect Punky's whips!
It was so nice to see Terry playing Frank tunes again. I think Terry genuinely has a lot of love for Frank and the Zappa family.

Hehe, here's an interesting perspective of the Philadelphia show at the Tower Theater:

http://stormyskies.livejournal.com/249219.html

It's a livejournal post from a young girl who went to the show with her dad. She may not know who Bozzio or Vai are, but she knows some of Franks tunes which is nice to see.

In case y'all didn't know, they added a bunch of dates in October. I'm likely going to Cleveland for an overnight adventure of music!

I don't know if y'all know, but Dweezil is planning to put out a DVD of this tour.

I caught the show in Louisville and it was truly amazing. Terry Bozzio and Joe Travers, heck the whole band was exceptional.

Dweezil said onstage that he wants to make this an annual thing. I hope he does and even more folks catch it next time.

I caught this show in Buffalo, and it was 3 1/2 hours of musical joy. If you're a Z fan, it was a very moving experience.

Hmmm... dead thread. And ZDZ is back out touring right now.

Anyone catching the shows? I'm hoping to go to the Indianapolis show in a few weeks.

I just went to see the show in Atlanta last night at the Variety Playhouse. Ray White was the featured guest and man did he slam! That guy's pipes are amazing. Songs that I remember are: Pygmy Twilight, Inca Roads, Wet T-shirt, Lucille, Sharleena, Cosmic Debris, Nanook Rubs it, St. Alphonso's Pancake BreakFast, Flakes, City of Tiny Lights..........

Joe Travers was killer and did a lot of singing as well. The whole band was great. My only complaints are the audience would not sit down in the area where the seating was. I was in the back which meant that I too had to stand. The other would be the sound man was not really working the desk so the solos tended to blare off the stage over the music.

All in all the band was excellent but the atmosphere was not that great. I cant wait to see them again next year.

Do not miss a chance to see ZPZ! I saw them last summer with Joe Traverse on drums and it was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. I am usually glued to drummers at shows, but with ZPZ, there are so many amazing players doing incredible things, you won't know where to watch.
My wife isn't a musician and didn't know any Zappa stuff at all, and she walked away totally amazed - which doesn't usually happen for her at concerts.
