I went to see a smaller ensemble of these Japanese drummers a few years ago and I can guarantee it was loud when they wanted it to be, and as quiet as a pin drop when they wanted. The small drums on the front of the stage started with one drummer playing singles, 1/8 notes I think and then every other measure added two more drums playing the same thing, gradually getting louder, until the place shook.
