Default YOUR FAVOURITE RIDE CYMBALS

hey guys,

what are your favourite Ride cymbals and why?

Mine would be the Sabian HH leopard ride, such a beautiful all round cymbal and has real tone to it

I have an old Paiste 20" 402 ride, It was pretty cheap. Its got a nice bell and its good to ride on when playing styles such as jazz and other soft music. However, my band is more of a heavier, pop punk band and I wouldnt highly reccomend this for crash riding. The sound becomes overwhelming and too washy and white. This is a good ride for intermeddiate gospel/jazz drummers

Sabian HH RBDR
nice dark tone, lots of stick definition, the cymbal just works.

I have went thru a few rides in the past few years..I need something that covers all the bases but most of all must be loud for hard rock covers..I tried a K, 2002 (great one) then went to the zildjian mega bell thinking it would have the loudest bell and bow out there...I then got a real good deal on a Paiste Signature dry ride 21" and put it on a stand side by side with the mega bell..i was blown away the bell and bow was actually louder on the Paiste dry not alone sounded so much better...the ping is perfect with just enough wash..whenever I here a perfect ride in a heavy song say anything from GnR's appetite for destruction I think I'm hearing my ride (though I think he used A's with a nice mixing job) its just the perfect ride!!!!

I agree with this guy ^^
the HH RBDR has a great bell, like you would fine in cymbals made for heavier playing, yet still has great stick definition for softer styles. If you have the money, I would highly reccomend it

Sabian Paragon. It is perfect for the style of music I like, and that my band plays. Nice ping, no wash, cuts through anything. I have crashes for crashing. :)

So much love for the AAX stage ride, guy had one at a church event and it was just blended in perfectly with the rest of the band, even crashed well and was good when playing quiet

Glad to hear it. I was thinking of getting this cymbal in the next week or so.

I don't like overly pingy rides that don't crash, but I also don't like overly washy rides where the wash too easily overtakes the ping. I'm thinking this one might be it. I drove around yesterday looking for one, but couldn't find one.

I've played on just two, both at music stores: one was a traditional finish 21" that was too pingy and the other was a brilliant 20" that was too washy. My cymbal.com has two 21"s; a brilliant (sold) that was perfect, and a traditional that was really nice, if just a touch too pingy. I think I'll be looking for a brilliant.

20 K Custom Dark for more wash or 20 AAX Stage Ride for more ping. Although I don't have it anymore the good old 20 Zildjian A Ping Ride; it is the New Beat of rides. If I am at a gig with people I don't like I will bring the Z Mega Bell to deafen the band and the first row of bar patrons or diners if I am playing a restaurant. I am just kidding... the first three rows.

I hate one-trick pony rides. These are my favorites that I play out most...

20" HHX Stage Ride: Bright with dark undertones
21" 50s Zildjian A: Cuts, blends, and the bell is incredible
24" K Light Ride: My favorite ride EVER. This beast can do anything at all volumes--it can be pingy and brash, it can be tanky and wash out, and it can be clicky and smokey. Incredibly versatile cymbal...

...plus, I just scored a 21" Istanbul Mehmet Legend Ride. This thing sounds great! I used it at an Easter gig to "try it out", and it certainly delivered! I mean, in truckloads! I have yet to fully explore it...

20" Zildjian K Custom Dark Ride - Sounds so good I bought two (the first one got stolen)

22" Zilco Ride - Don't know what model it is. It's either late '60's or early '70's. It's got more stick definition than the K, but without being too dry. Almost like a heavier/darker Sweet Ride.

24" Paiste Giant Beat

I also own my two favourites:
Paiste 20" Signature Full Ride - complex, full sound but still with good definition, crisp but not piercing bell - my favourite general-purpose ride;
Paiste 20" Dry Dark Ride (the one I'm holding in my profile pic) - more or less the opposite, very dry but with more wash than a lot of dry/dark cymbals, piercing bell, unusual 'shattering' crash. Much more of a niche cymbal, but still amazing.

That was exactly my problem when trying these rides out. I tested both and then decided what i wanted more of..ping or wash. I went with ping but i like a somewhat pingy ride. Oh! And i took the traditional finish.

These are nice rides IMO. I don't think you'll be disappointed with which ever one you choose to get!

Paiste 24" Giant Beat Ride.

Dat wash, man.

The bell on it is amazingly cutting, too.

Wish I owned one.

My 24" Paiste Giant Beat Ride - love that classic rock sound and the bell is unique.
Another fellow drummer has mentioned it as well!

I'd probably have to go with the Meinl Sand ride, or pretty much any Zildjian K. Maybe discluding the Special Dry.

I was going to say just about anything with a big "K" on it, especially the special dry ride! I own two of those, a very light one and a heavier one. They're very different and both great.

I'm liking my A Zildjian Med Ride. It seems to work for almost everything.
It has a nice ping and a mid sized bell that is suprisingly loud and defined.

The Paiste Alpha Rock Ride would work great for a second ride, for those driving beats though.

Oh no, now I gotta go and buy some more stuff. :/

Sometimes I hear them being played and I love them, but with my experience playing them in the past I couldn't get the sound out of I wanted.
I would absolutely love it as a secondary ride though.

Also the K Light rides are one of my all time favorites.

Sounds like kind of an odd choice, but my 18" Zildjian K crash ride. Just picked it up a couple of weeks ago at GC used for WAY too cheap ($80). Used it at a couple of rehearsals and a gig and it suits me fine. Just the right amount of wash, a small but potent bell, and a nice dry crash when I lay into it. A bit smaller than I'm used to, but so much more responsive than a 20.

I like dry. Really dry.

My favorite that I've owned has definitely been my current Zildjian K Custom Dry Ride. Great, articulate, dry sound with a trashy bow sound.
I also absolutely love Sabian's Jojo Mayer Fierce Rides. One of the closest recreations (be it accidental or intentional) of Tony Williams' Nefertiti-era ride sound.

My friend has a k con 22" med thin low ride, and man it is the best ride I've ever heard. Such a great body and trashy edge, and the bell is just wonderful. Very separated from the rest of the cymbal but sooo nice.

I'm also a big fan of the Legacy and Legacy Heavy rides, and when my 22" Omni comes in this week, hopefully that will be at the top of my list as well.

Just to follow up on my earlier post: I just ordered the 21" AAX Stage Ride in brilliant.

I'd been searching ebay and used at GC, but found one new for not that much more than what I was finding used (and considerably less that the advertised $289 online price).

I hope I like it!

One of my favorites is a 22" K Pre-Aged Dry Light (no longer made) which weighs in at right around 2300 grams. With the right kind of ride stick, it's a woody "tah" on an airy cushion of wash/trash with just a wee bit of "brittle" to round out its character. Zildjian still makes a 20" version of this (I think) but it's remarkably different than the 22s. I'm hoping to someday score a thinner version of the 22 to add to the family.

I'm also a fan of Bill Stewart's second generation ride cymbals (K Custom Dry Complex II), particularly the 24". Don't have one yet but it's on the shortlist.

My favorite rides are the Zildjian 20" K Custom Dark, Zildjian 21" Sweet ride, Sabian 21" Vintage ride, Sabian 21" Raw Bell Dry rides in both traditional and brilliant finishes (there is a significant difference in their sound with the edge going to the traditional) and some 20" Ping rides in both the Zildjian A and A Custom series. Other rides I own, but couldn't call them my favorites are a Zildjian A 20" Medium in a brilliant finish, 20" A Custom Medium, Sabian 20" HHX Evolution. I recently sold a very nice sounding Sabian AA Raw Bell Dry ride when I decided to invest in the Zildjian K Custom series. I usually run two rides on most of my kits and the above cymbals give me a very wide palate of sounds for virtually any genre of music without having to compromise.

My 20" HHX Legacy Ride, IMO the perfect cymbal. However because I play with 2B's now I am getting a bit more wash from it than I require so I have to get a heavier ride with more of a ping I am getting a 21" AA Medium Heavy ride today, and using the Legacy as a Crash/Ride.
