Default Swapping my hi hat top to get more funky...

I have some rather ancient 14" Zildjian Quick Beat hats that work great to cut through the noise in my metal band but they are too clangy and loose sounding for a dance/funk project that I'm joining.

Will putting a light top cymbal on the (quite heavy) bottom get me closer to what I'm after?

People seem to recommend Zildjian Ks for a funky sound and I'd love to get away with only having to buy one top cymbal.

Any one got any advice?

Ta.

It couldn't hurt to buy a K top hat, and then if that isn't good enough, pick up another K bottom hat.

I should think that the Zildjian K hi-hat top should do the trick. You might still find it being a little too clangy though, so in that case, I'd actually recommend using your Quick Beat top as the bottom, paired with the K as the top. The K is a medium weight, and the Quick Beat top is a medium-heavy - a fairly common combination that should do wonders.

If all else fails, buy the K bottom as well.

Cheers everyone. Never even occurred to me to put the top Quick Beat on the bottom - what a great idea.

I'll get down the shop and try it out.
