75%? We can do better than that!

I watch my favorite shows on Netflix whenever possible. The reason? No pharma ads on Netflix AFAICT. Plus it's a way clearer picture. Pharma commercials are the friggin worst and no other commercial can match their ability to annoy me.

Really? I see your pharma commercials and raise you the commercials with the smartly dressed middle-aged woman extolling the virtues of "safe and proven" gas fracking, how the world is a much better place thanks to the petroleum industry and that it all needs to stay that way.

That, and the Mal-Wart commercials that try to position themselves between mom and apple pie.

You may get night sweats, rapid heart beat, shortness of breath, loss of vision, migraine headaches, uncontrollable diarrhea, vomiting, heart attack, stroke, and even death. But if you are okay with that we can help your knee pain.

Yeah, worst advertising campaigns ever, but apparently they still sell pills.

People who take prescription drugs without realizing that these drugs pass directly through their bodies upon elimination and end up in our fresh water.

Again, using his logic, the product that comes out is exactly the same as the product that went in. It just comes out of a different tap. That being the case, I reckon I could live with that.

Funny, I know, but alcohol gets processed by the liver, synthetic estrogen from birth control pills does not. Estrogen levels in drinking water are higher than any time since the EPA began testing and it is not naturally occuring. It is believed to be the cause of the dramatic increase of gender defects in aqautic animals.

Not to worry, all the new male testosterone products will soon balance everything out.

Alright, this annoys me: Whatever happened to the perfectly good and serviceable word "per"? It seems to have been systematically replaced with "a". For example, people no longer say "I get $200 per gig". Instead they say "I get $200 a gig". "A gig"? Really? Which one? The last time I saw "per" it was hiding in between M and G in the acronym for "miles per gallon". Now it's all "so much a this" and "so much a that". No! It's "so much per this or that"!

It gets me so riled up that I want to punch the next people I hear saying it. Of course, I only have so many good punches in me so I'll have to dole them out carefully: No more than one punch a person.

So, it seems this thread on the annoyance of people beginning sentences with the word "so" hasn't really done much to curb the trend. Survey says that the use of the word "so" on DW seems to be on the rise instead of the decline.

So....much for that.

Noo, really? I'd have thought it was ok, as the word "for" is implied. As in Mary Poppins, "Feed the birds, twopence a bag".

"Alright", OTOH, really should be two separate - I repeat, for anybody who doesn't know, "sepArate" words, otherwise we're straying into "alot" territory.

Please don't punch me, I'm only little and I wear glasses!

Some words belong together. Alot and alright are great examples.

Madge, I don't care if you're little and wear glasses, I would lay you out with one punch.

(I just had to say that to see how rediculous it looked in print. You know I would never harm a precious hair on your sweet head)

Phil on the other hand, alright I would punch him alot!

I did enjoy it, but I also felt a little scummy writing it, kind of like Phil, but I had to laugh at the wackiness of the mental picture of me laying you out.

The whole thought was so wrong, I just couldn't resist it lol. Thanks for being the good sport you are with those precious hairs.

I'm annoyed at my parents.

I'm annoyed at society.

I'm annoyed that I couldn't think for myself at a young age and I feel like I've wasted most of my life being a sheep, doing what others have told me, not valuing myself, not standing up for myself.

People that fuss over grammar set out to make themselves feel smart but I think that they're demonstrating that they're inflexible and aren't willing to try and understand someone else.

I recall ''alot'' being a word but I have no way of verifying my sources at this point. Language is an evolving thing, it gets bastardized, shaped by what's cool and they let all sorts of stupid words fly (twerk etc), so just let me use my ''wrong'' word and find something important to worry about.

One more thing: the news annoys me. I don't read it anymore. If something genuinely important happens I hear it from someone else or I overhear others talking about it. I find it generally depressing, frustrating, biased and it annoys me that the majority of people will read it and let it steer their opinions in line with Rupert Murdoch or whoever. Not to mention all the pop culture garbage and ''research articles'' that steal idiots attention for 10 minutes so they can click on some ad or be forced to watch some advertisement at the start of the video.

"lite" spelling annoys me as does apostrophe abuse.

Pepper's for sale and mile's per gallon make no sense. You don't get to put an apostrophe wherever you like. Contractions get apostrophes. Possessive forms get apostrophes. Plural forms do not get apostrophes (unless they're possessive plural).

The following are three different words: there, their, they're. Learn how to use them or risk appearing like a dolt to someone who has even a modicum of understanding of the English language.

"They're over there with their grammar books and nasty looks."

Finally, I'm annoyed that no one has started a thread concerning my wonderful sense of humor and particular skill with the written word. I'd do it myself but I can't because I'm also the most modest person in the world.

Oh gosh, I'm with you on that. We call it the "grocer's apostrophe" in UK English. My mum's favourite sign ever appeared next to a market stall selling cheap timepieces. The sign bore the legend "Them watch's is sh*t."

Reciprocity is the key here, my friend. Plus an assurance that you won't lamp me for not using "per".

Oh, not a problem. I like the quote from Robert Fripp: "Offer no violence". Language abuse might be annoying but it's insufficient to incite fisticuffs. For that, we need something much more important, you know, like the curious habit of people switching back and forth between the hands with knife and fork because apparently it requires too great an exercise in coordination to hold a piece of meat with a fork in the right hand while cutting it with a knife in the left. That's worth fitting over (preferably, with a knife held in the left hand).

With the way that language is quite dynamic, and with new words added every year, how can any written word ever be wrong. I had a conversation with an English teacher who commented on my conversation with a Vietnamese lady over our English language. She was waiting on a car repair and studying English as a second language. I asked her to pronounce, through, enough, cough, dough et. al and all I did was confuse her, of course. All of those words have the same body but different sounds. She, the english teacher, said english would be much easier to learn if people could learn to take words in context. For instance, if I told you a just spent fore dollars on my lunch, the average person would have a stroke playing the grammar police because they know that I meant for, or was it four? If you read the sentence then you would know I meant the number. If I said the car is theres, the grammar police would trip all over themselves telling me I must be stupid because they knew I meant theyre's or is it theirs. When we speak we dont have to differentiate and the conversation goes on, but in writing, OH MY God, you dummy. Maybe a little more common sense and a little less book smarts.

Just to add a conversational non-sequitur...

Paying my *%&^ing water bill.

I live on my own. I can't get a meter. My bill is probably wrong but there's piss all I can do about it.

Gah.

That's money I'll never see again that could have gone on blackjack and hookers.

It's a First World Problem thread, surely?

Quite honestly, as long as I understand what somebody means, I couldn't care less really. My elder daughter isn't dyslexic but simply can't spell to save her life. Both my daughters say "could of", "would of" and "should of". It doesn't make them stupid and they are able to express themselves clearly and indeed lyrically when appropriate. I just don't have enough to worry about, that's all, although I'm starting to worry about holding the knife in the left hand and the fork in the right.

However, what really REALLY gets me is people who are unfamiliar with the oeuvre of Eric Clapton.

The word diet bothers me. Diet Soda. Diet Coke. WTF? In Europe they call it Coke lite? Right? Am I right? I never drink the stuff. Why don't they call it Diet Beer since everybody is on a diet?

For that matter, Light beer annoys me. It's kinda (like that word?) in the same category as "gay" marriage. I don't even know how they can consider that stuff actual beer. It's like Beer Soda or something. Light Beer...blasphemy I say.

It is sort of unusual. Dyslexia is very non-specific (and debatable - there's a lot of talk about the word) but when you're assessed they test a number of different things, including reading and spelling. In my case, it's short-term memory and spatial reasoning that are problematic.

They effectively give you an IQ test in each of these areas and try to spot a pattern based on a baseline. In my case, one of my scores came out as 50 points lower than the baseline score I should be getting. Bear in mind, 100 is the 'average' IQ score.

That kind of discrepancy really is unusual apparently (but I'm not going to say what '50 points lower' constitutes in my case!) and it took 22 years to find.

Light beer is for people who dislike beer but enjoy urinating.

The thing about grammar police is two fold: First, right or wrong, people will judge other people's intelligence based on the other person's writing ability. I always try to reinforce to my students the idea that when they graduate, their resumes and cover letters had better be spot on or their chances of obtaining an interview will be nil.

Second, and more importantly, if we had any sense about us we'd officially change the language. I mean, the concept of phonetics in English is almost laughable. Most folks agree that we have a "living language" that evolves, yet we can't seem to codify any structural changes. Of course, here in the US this would be a practical impossibility as the only thing we seem capable of creating these days is grid-lock and stalling. Heck, we still haven't managed to use the metric system with any consistency (save for soda which is sold universally in 2 liter and 3 liter bottles while virtually every other liquid product remains in pints, quarts and gallons- go figure). In contrast, two things that I like about English are the very large vocabulary which allows for subtle shades of meaning and the brilliant idea that inanimate objects do not possess gender (gender neutral pronouns).

Erm, twofold and peoples'

Sorry Jim, couldn't help myself.

Just for clarity: I'm posting this in the spirit of a good natured poke in the ribs, not as condescending point scoring.

Well ok, I'm a grammar pedant and I just can't help myself.

"Two fold" could go either way but not noticing the plural possessive is a punishable offense. I'm afraid I'll have to punish myself by pronouncing all English words with a "gh" as a guttural 'g' for the rest of the day. Tough luck for me!
