On the other hand, I first knew Hugh Laurie as the TV actor Dr. House. It knocked me over when I first heard him speak as Hugh Laurie. He fooled me for years lol. When he speaks normally, he's got a distinct accent. (from how I thought he spoke) Great actor. His band is incredible too and his choice of music works great.

But back on topic, today's annoyance? I love to hate on the commercials for pharmaceuticals. OMG gag me with a spoon, I just want to set myself on fire. I have NO idea why I listen to it and don't mute it. It's such a trainwreck, and I can't not look lol.

Then you have the lawsuit commercials right after the pill commercials for the bad drugs that were from 10 years ago. That's entertainment!

That's because Hugh Laurie is AWESOME!!! So awesome in fact that even a metal-head would listen to his blues album (yes, I admitted it)!

Agree Hugh is a true renaissance man. That's a big admission there Todd. Thank you for that lol.

Do the Maths? Is that the right way? I don't believe I've ever heard it said that way.

I can picture Jules jumping up and down throwing a fit!

Mathematics is a multi-disciplinary subject. There are multiple types of singular Mathematic - Geometry, Algebra, Calculus, Pure, etc.. Each of these is a 'Mathematic Discipline'.

'Mathematic' is a singular term.

Therefore, 'Mathematics' is the correct form and the correct form of the abbreviation is 'Maths' if we assume we are referring to general mathematics. Like the school subject.

Suck it.

EDIT:

Andy - or building things out of 'Aluminum' *shudder*.

And now for something completely different: Things that are the exact opposite of annoying. I particularly enjoy what I call "humorously enhanced phrasology", a way of wording something in an extended and humorous fashion. Zappa was very good at this. I bring it up now because Dr. Watso had a very nice one a couple of posts back regarding his "reason for editing":

I agree, Laurie is a hellluvan actor. I heard him slip up once in an episode of House. He said "Ice cream". Instead of saying it like an American would (I-scream) he pronounced both words (Ice-cream). Damn Poms always over-pronouncing everything. I like that East London accent. Watching Guy Richie movies made me a fan of the Cockney rhyming slang.

Maths?? You must be havin' a tin bath!

On my report card it was always listed as math. I sat in math classes, not maths class, in school. I honestly never heard the term maths before this. Must be a Euro/Aussie thing?

Math is both singular and plural. If you're adding an s, you're wrong, unless you're talking about more than one type of math, then you can add an S, but there's still better ways to do it.

Or, you could just say "mathematics" if you really want an s on the word. Abbreviating it and adding an S anyway is silly.

But I speak English Madge! It's cool if Americans are the ones who are technically wrong about this but Smoke raises a great point about gym class. I don't see the friggin special need for a plural for math class only. It's implied. By that logic, all the subjects should be plural. Socials Studies. Englishes Class. Lunches. Studys Hall. You guys are wack a doo!

Do the math is a cliche in the US. Not do the maths! We'd get our asses kicked if we said that. It sounds too pussified lol.

I'm with you Watso. Here in America, the people who call math class maths, or mathematics....are the ones who get their lunch money taken away from them lol.

But I do admire how proper you Europeans are.

Let's not be so hasty! If we hold them to that standard, then we also lose the right to simply add an "s" on the end of a word because we feel like it.

When they start using the word mathematic, I'll accept that point. However, until such a time, I'll stand by the English that I (and every other Aussie kid) was taught in school and leave the Yank-speak to the Yanks.

We were all spawned from our mum, not our "mom". We sit on our arses, because we all know if we were sitting our our "ass" we'd be riding a donkey. And the subject I failed miserably at school was maths, not "math". So is the way of the world here Downunder.

Hey, I was just trolling Drumkat.......I mean, if the dude's gonna wrap himself in the Aussie flag and start brandishing a bit of national pride all about the forum, then it's only fair he at least get his spelling correct. It's in the interests of patriotism, of course. :-)

Quite unreasonable. "Mathematics" is a reference to a group containing specific members. Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and analysis. There is no singular form of the word. To single out one of the group is simply to use that specific name.

Math, or "maths" is a much more general abbreviation. The only acceptable use of the slang term "maths" (by a true gentleman of language) is when actually referring to the former group of mathematics as an actual group. Any other use of the term "maths" will not be recognized by myself, or my fellow language noblemen.

Yes, thus a shortened form naturally lends itself to "maths".

Geez, I dunno. Yanks. Everything's bold, everything's brash. The finer details get lost in all the noise. ;-)

The U.S. consumes 75% of the world's pharmaceutical drugs, is only 4% of the world's population, but is a dismal 72nd in health according to the World health Organization. Um, something ain't right here. Commercial television gets 30% of their ad revenue from drug commercials. Go figure. "Ask your doctor how they can get you on dangerous drugs for life..."

English is one of the evolving languages. If I'm "bad" am I actually good? What am I if I'm gay? Bully for you! Is that good for you, or is someone going to beat you up?!? Barbie? Someone's doll or a grill?

Here, we drive on a parkway and park in a driveway. That makes sense, right?

Yup, gotta love it!
