Default Thinking about getting an E-kit and know nothing about them

So ive recently decided that I'm going to get an e-kit for practice as my space and living circumstances don't allow for loud noise in the house anymore. Right now I kind of have my sights on the Alesis DM8 pro. So my question is, how does this sorcery work? Can I expand the kit? Are different brands compatable, ie swapping the cymbals out, getting a roland brain and using other manufatures heads? Any advice/insight would be greatly appreciated. Also I looked at the dm7 and thought it to be cool if i could use a better pad for the snare and add a cymbal. Thoughts?

Hi Jay:

Welcome to the forum!

Lots of good information here about e-drums, modules, mixing / matching, growth paths, etc. Perhaps do some searching on those keywords and see what pops up. Also you may want to wander over to Vdrums.com. There is more, e-drum specific discussion over there than here at DW.

I cannot help you much with Alesis but know my way around Roland products pretty well. Let me know if I can help you with questions on those.

Hi Jay - How much spare research time have you got?

There's plenty of useful e-drum info in the digital drummer e-mags: http://www.digitaldrummermag.com/BACK_ISSUES.html
You might want to check out a basic intro article about 'Your First E-kit' in this one: http://issuu.com/digitaldrummer/docs...rummer_may2103

Also if you haven't found it already, here's a link to the unofficial Alesis drum forum: http://www.dmdrummer.com/index.php
