I play along to this song sometimes... there is a very subtle open/close thing going on with the hats, are you playing that here?

Rick Marotta demonstrates this groove I think in "Classic Ablums: Aja". He uses a unique technique on the hi hat to get that feel, and also to get those subtle hi hat shoops. Its worth checking out.

Excellent work though.

Cheers guys, much appreciated... I have indeed seen that very video many times, it's great for hearing that groove isolated, Marotta plays it like no other though!

Also good for the scene where Fagin and Becker Isolate Michael McDonalds backing vocals... Pretty incredible!

With the hihat lifts I found that bouncing my left leg in 8ths gives a nice subtle lift for the second of the two 16ths with the left hand. Just a touch of air. For the more pronounced openings at the end of the bar I rock back on my heel for a bit more of a splash... You can actually see it pretty well.
