Default What resonant head for Pearl Free Floater?

I have a 14 x 5" Free floating snare, maple shell. There are air vent holes drilled into it from a previous owner (which is why I got it cheap) and I know eventually I'll have to start thinking about replacing the resonant head.

Right now there's a Remo Ambassador Snare Side on it. I don't know how old it is. The snare has kind of a boxy sound no matter what batter head I use and I'd like to get away from that. Lots of thwack, and then falls flat right after the thwack. Almost like a gun shot but not a ballsy one. Now personally I like a deep sound but also sustaining, and I know that's asking a lot for a 5" depth.

What's the difference in all of the snare side depths and what would work best in my situation? thank you!

I have the 5" maple free floater and find it sounds great with coated ambassador batter and ambassador snare side. What batter do you have on it?

I just put a brand new Evans Power Center Reverse Dot on it. It's been hard to dial in a perfect tone. The other heads have yielded somehwhat similar results but this head especially is difficult.

I've always used ambassadors on mine for the batter head, but I have just mounted the evans head with the little pinholes around the perimeter on my 6 1/2" brass free floater, and I like it a lot.

Evans hazy reso or remo ambassador hazy reso skins.

I have the 6.5 steel shell and I use the Evans HD genera dry. Really kills some of the overtones that I get from that shell. It is actually the only Evans head I use on any of my drums, but I really like it on that snare.
