Default What I'm listening to, a Matt Chamberlain clip.

Hey guys,

I've been doing this section on my website where I share clips of some of my favorite drummers. This time, I wanted to share with you a very cool clip of Matt Chamberlain tracking some drums in the studio. Check it out:

Thanks!

Wow. He is just so good. I just finished a stint in the studio, and I wish my playing was half as solid and consistent as his! Thanks for the link!

Hey! No problem. I love how he plays, he inspired my drumming a lot!! Go check out Brad Mehldau's Largo cd. He plays some amazing tracks on that. That's where I discovered his drumming.

I've watched this clip before. It's great.

The thing about Matt Chamberlain that sets him apart for me is how much music he's played on that I've loved without even knowing he played drums. I loved the music on the Wallflowers, Tori Amos and Fiona Apple albums and really dug the drum grooves before I found out Matt played on them. He was the original drummer of the Edie Brickell band, New Bohemians, and played on Pearl Jam's Alive. I think he was the SNL drummer for one season, too. Incredible career so far.

The dude is just an incredible musician and as far as I'm concerned, the best session player of his generation.

That's an important point you just mentionned, the fact that he has played on lots of records you love. Same thing for me. And it's also the same for all the drummers I love, I can listen to recordings they did and enjoy that. Guys like Vinnie, Gadd, Bill Stewart, Tony Williams, Keith Carlock and more. As much as I can enjoy some virtuoso stuff, I enjoy it even more when it's played with music I also love like the guys I mentionned do best.

I was first turned on to his drumming last year maybe when he was featured in Modern Drummer. He had so many insights he shared about playing with people, coming up with new sounds, letting a song guide your creativity, etc. Like 8Mile said, he has done some of the best session work out there, and the guy is just a monster player in his own right.

Check out some of the videos of him playing with Charlie Hunter. It's virtuosic playing I actually want to listen to!
