Default Has anyone tried the Mike Johnston 10 day plan?

It's in the April issue of Drum Magazine. I pick it up every once in a while if something looks interesting.

I like what I've seen from Mike and thought I would give it a go. I actually increased the core rudiments from his plan a few bpm's. A few of them I had been stuck at the same tempo for a while.

His plan is really all about instilling muscle memory in the hands. Nothing really ground breaking but it was a nice well thought out routine.

I'm now going back and plugging in some of my own rudiments and exercises using the same format.

Here's a link to more info. I'm curious what others think.

Oh, hey, I've got an article in that same issue of Drum, and need to go get a copy. I'm not sure this program is meant for me, but I'll take a look at it.

From the perspective an almost-senior citizen beginner/intermediate hack who's been tired of futzing around for a couple of years and not showing much improvement, it's been the kick in the butt I needed.

Things I noticed after the faithfully completing the 10 days:
- improved muscle strength and endurance, particularly in weaker (left) hand and arm
- noticeable improvement in applying rudiments to the kit (now we're talking!)
- motivation to practice more regularly and more effectively

It was tedious and painful at times during that cycle (there were times my left hand fatigued to failure), but I'm a believer based on the benefits I received from it.

I looked into it and it didn't really seem worth doing. If you practice everyday you'll have the same results.
To me, it just seemed like he was giving out a practice regimen to younger drummers that insist on asking, "Well what should I practice?"

That was pretty much my take on it too.

For me, it was just a routine to break up the routine...

It helped me start on an actual practice regimen and it's a good kickstarter for consistent practice. As a marimba player, the muscle memory thing always worked for me on marimba- somehow my musical memory & muscle memory combined there to make great stuff, but I could never achieve the same results on drumset. Finally, this article made the obvious connection in my head between the muscle memory & playing ability. Good plan anyways. Easy to plug in lots of stuff to.

Its a practice routine, if you aint got one and cant figure one out its all good. For all you practice noobs that feel they have got something out of this, or seen the light, you have, its called practice. By definition this is what practice is. Its great that Mike has got the message across like this.
