Default The New Ludwig Elements

I am seriously considering buying this kit for gigging because I LOVE the sizes in the Pop configuration (20 x15 bass drum and shallow toms) and I really like the looks of the black gold sparkle wrap. However, I have some concerns abut the sound because it says it they are 9 ply Poplar shells, whereas they used to have birch outer and inner plys. I play in a mostly classic rock cover band. Any opinions?

To me the 2013 Elements seem to be upgraded and better looking overall than in previous years. Ludwig has really been raising their bar on so many levels over the last year or two. These '13 Elements look really sweet.

They still have the birch series - http://www.ludwig-drums.com/element_birch.php
A bit of a step up both in shells and hardware. Birch is a great warm, bright, dry sound. I don't know why it isn't offered in the higher series.
