So it appears there is a page featuring Ed, but there's no link to his page on the list of 500. Would love to see this fixed! I'm digging Eric Dolphy's brilliant date at the Five Spot with Booker Little, Mal Waldron, Richard Davis and Ed. Some of the best jazz ever recorded, and Ed is simply brilliant. Submitted respectfully for your consideration, 8Mile |

Hi 8 Mile
Yes, there are nearly 1000 drummers featured on Drummerworld, but the top 500 represent a ranking coming from clicks. Yes, Ed Blackwell is eventually in the 500 top drummers, just need a little but more material, Videos. Can you point me to his importants recordings? Will try to get them or can you send me MP3's? Thanks a lot Bernhard |

Hey Bernhard,
I didn't know that's how the top 500 worked, from clicks. Good to know. I would be happy to put something together to showcase Ed's talents. Thank you! 8Mile |

I don't want to steal 8Mile's thunder and I'm sure he's got a lot more. But here are a few items to showcase him:
"Bemsha Swing", from one of my favorite albums, The Avant-Garde with Don Cherry and John Coltrane. The bassist on different tracks alternate between Charlie Haden and Percy Heath. (I think Percy plays on this one). The whole album is great, but if you just want to 'cut to the chase' on this track, Ed plays a short solo starting around 3:59: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7tKtPJHaAU A video showing him solo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZveAgT-sFyQ Another solo video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVoSnv-Z6SU Ornette Coleman's album: This Is Our Music is great, plus his duet work with Don Cherry was fantastic. I was lucky to see them in a small club. Just superb. -John |
