Marcus Gilmore's Zildjian Ride

Hi everyone,

after a long time as a visitor and some weeks as a member, this is my first thread.

I just watched the concert of Vijay Iyer Trio in the festival "Jazz en Tête" 2011 and I was amazed by the beautiful sound of this ride cymbal. I think it is a Zildjian´s Sound Lab prototype. Very thin, bended, with rivets and some really big hammering.

- Is there a lot of them like this out there?
- Are Zildjians prototypes availables for the general public or are they specially made for the artists?

Thank you!

Zildjian prototypes are not very available. They sell some at PASIC but generally you're not going to find anything like this around.

A thinner K Con might be close to that sound. Meinl does a lot of production stuff with that kind of large-peen hammering too.
