I think a 13" rack tom, 16" floor tom, 22" bass drum and 14" snare could navigate most of the stylistic waters out there. Add a 10" tom to the left of the 13", and you have a nice spread of high, mid and low tones that would even work in a Rush cover band if you are clever enough. I like one of every basic sound in cymbals; hats, ride, crash, splash and china.
Minus the 10" tom, this has always been my auditioning kit. If I can get through "Tom Sawyer" on that setup, then most of what the band throws at me should be no big whoop. The bonus is that it all loads easily, and doesn't freak out the rest of the band!
