Are you ashamed of what someone might find on your playlist?

Mad About Drums

Pollyanna's Agent
We all think that we have "good taste" in music, however, is any of you who have a band(s) or artist(s) within your playlist in your media player or i-pod that you're not very proud to have added to your computer, and that you would feel a bit ashamed if someone, especially musicians friends who are browsing your playlist and say thing like "hey guys, look who is he's listening to, haha..."

I have such a band on my playlist... What about you?

Beyonce, put a ring on it. < hangs head in shame>

I sorta' like Abba.....during my audition they called out "Dancing Queen" and we dutifully played it.

I think everyone trying to work should be mindful of what hit songs are out there, because chances are, you'll get asked to play them. And if you can't, they'll just go to the next person who does, taking you out of the loop of possible gig-dom.

So for that reason I wouldn't be ashamed of what was on my iPod. I call it "defensive listening". Hell, I never thought I'd ever do a recording of the ol' Julie London/Dean Martin song, Sway. I'm glad I knew about it before asked to do work on it.

Nickelback. For some reason everybody seems to hate Nickelback and I have no idea why.

I have an ABBA too ... Money Money Money. Zero guilt - great little pop song. I have Barry Manilow's Copacabana in my collection ... a fun Latin-y number.

I've always been a sucker for a good melody so I like plenty of pop. Until it was overplayed I thought Adele's Rolling in the Deep was the best thing to hit the Top of the Pops for a very long time. I like Maroon 5 a lot and can never work out why people dis them.

I am waaay into Supertramp, and band that seems to be routinely dismissed, I'm guessing because of the whiny vocals. I just enjoy the classy musicianship, high level creativity, excellent lyrics, strong melodies, killer production ...

Also in my collection - 10CC, George Michael, Robert Palmer, Anastacia, Promises, The Bangles, Cilla Black, Crash Test Dummies, Eurythmics, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Evermore, George Benson ... the list goes on ........

And let's not forget one of the coolest pop songs ever - Funkytown :)

There's no shame in liking ABBA at all.

My mother was a HUGE fan of ABBA, so I listened to all their songs, and I had to have a "best of" in my playlist, some are good songs indeed and some reminds me of her, so it's all good, I was only kidding, I'm not ashamed really... :)

I don't know why, I always liked this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEjLoHdbVeE&ob=av2e

Do you mean this one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRDc31Co8sI

So far so good eh? we haven't seen any... err, shamefull band or artist really...

Anyone's got any Spice Girls songs? :))

Taylor Swift
Avril Lavigne
Katy Perry

And I have their complete album collections, not just the singles.

I know. I'm gonna hide in my room now and cry in shame.

My mum was mad keen on ABBA too. Used to drive me crazy.

Here are my favourite ABBA covers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRt3p_mUPsk

Yup. An Aussie band, Pseudo Echo, did a killer 80s version too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnejLmQGYhg

there is no music that i don't like or that i'm ashamed of having on my playlist.

there are however songs that i don't feel like getting sh*t over from small minded people who's worlds are quite small and can't fathom anything outside of their little boxes.

yes i like the Spice Girls. "Wanna Be", "Saturday Night Divas", "Spice Up Your Life" and the video in the desert one...I'm giving you everything - whatever the name of that one is.

if anyone knows Mel B, tell her i said she's purty. and i love her Yorkshire accent.

Carpenters ? check
Manilow ? check
Debbie Gibson ? check

Carpenters "Goodbye To Love" contains one of the best guitar solos ever recorded. it's a good as the "Bohemian Rhapsody" solo or any other you can think of "Stairway To Heaven".
i love Debbie Gibson so much, i had a block inlaid into the fretboard of my Custom guitar that reads "Anything Is Possible".

My mum was mad keen on ABBA too. Used to drive me crazy.

I sympathize, my mom's favourite was I Do, I Do, I Do..... I just hate that song, I didn't mind too much for the others, but this one, oh girl, it's a bady the whole way... :(

Hahaha, He's very good, I enjoyed the intreview :))

I still have the original 45 rpm record somewhere in the attic from Lipp Inc

That Aussie band did a good cover I think, but I couldn't use your link, not allowed where I live, so I listened to this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhhO5Jqt7jY , it's the same, yes?

hey Pol -

thought you might like this. i know i do.

Nah, it's horrid lol

Can't stand the dark haired woman in the group - she's so annoyingly bouncy and try-hard. If I had my way she'd be sold off for scientific experiments!

That's annoying too - the darn lawyers are everywhere.

How about this for a confession? I really enjoy Wham!'s Careless Whisper *gasp*

From a jazz POV I confess to being a fan of Wynton Marsalis (his music, not his conservative views). I especially love his drummer, Herlin Riley ...this solo is one of my favourite ones ever, the closest thing I've heard to Papa Jo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFvgCtomkqE

If liking Wynton is wrong - I don't want to be right. Herlin is just a beautiful player. I've been fortunate to see him with Wynton more times than I can count. Wynton is one of my favorites.

To the topic at large - people who know me would anticipate anything they'd fine in my library.

My Library spans 1920's to today. It includes Country, Classical, Funk, R&B, all eras of Jazz, Folk, Bluegrass, Rock from Fats Domino to Foo Fighters with a heavy dose of 70's and 80's, Instrumental Hawaiian Guitar, Vocals (Dean Martin, Sinatra, and so many of that style)... Probably so much more I can't even begin to recall. I love it all....
