Im about to get my first drumset, and was wondering if there is a good video out there at shows how to set it up, and tune the drums... all the basics. Thanks!

For tuning toms, do you only have to tune the batter head? I didnt see him tune the bottom side of the tom.

Also, is there a website where i can hear the basic pitch that each drum should sound like?
I know some of it is preference, but for a beginner, it might be helpful for me.

Tune both heads on all drums.

I don't tune to specific notes so have no idea. Do a search here. There's plenty of guys who do and the topic has been discussed at length.

Tommy Igoe has a great DVD called "Getting started on drums". It includes initial setup, tuning and getting started with some grooves and fills. Recommended!

Derek Roddy is in the process of editing video footage for his new DVD to come out in a few months which is all about the topic - setting up a drumset.

Here's some info and pics he's shared on his forum:

Matt Ritter has a section on ergonomic drum setup (about 15 minutes I guess) on his DVD "Bass Drum Techniques for Today's Drummer - Unburying The Beater". Although this DVD is mainly on another topic it does have excellent info on drum setup. Plus it's top notch for optimizing one's foot technique.

As far as I can tell, a lot of the tuning process is based on personal preference. The only thing that you need to remember is that the smaller ones should sound higher and the bigger ones should sound lower.
