Default The hidden life of the drummer :(

Photo's, videos, live stage - we're always the last focus of attention, & not just because we're partially obscured by our drums. Here's a shot our gobist took at last night's rehearsal to post on social media. He took quite a few shots, but chose this one = tells you something eh!

Post your "drummer deliberately ignored" photo's / stories :)

Ha! That's why I bring the camera to band practice, I'm front and centre of all our band videos.

Happens to me all of the time - both stills and video... If it weren’t for the BD logo, we wouldn’t know who was back there...

My Mom would always say, "If you want something done right, do it yourself!" Tripod set up just past the hihats looking at you.

What really annoys me the most is when I'm watching TV and or video coverage of live concerts. The most active player on stage is always the drummer. And yet the drummer gets the least amount of coverage in the video. Usually they take a shot of the drummer playing and it's a 2 to 3 second shot. It's not even long enough to figure out what kind of drum kit they are playing. Damn annoying !!!!

Correct. I just watched a video yesterday where I was trying to see who the drummer was and in 7 minutes there was one or two 2 second shot.

You need to fight back Andy. At least put a small Guru logo right above the FU logo on your bass drum head. Yeah I know it's not in your kind hearted nature, but you know how the world will treat you if you don't stand up for yourself (at least once in a while).

Not only does our singer regularly post photos where I'm concealed, she still posts photos with their old drummer who's not been in the group for over a year.

As a stand up drummer doing rockabilly, I'm continually being stood in front of. My avatar pic is a rare shot...I assure you it's not like that normally. :-(

Got ya beat on this one Andy-here you go-the band and everyone has their back to me-the female singer is pointing in disgust and her mate has turned his back. So I'm like Oz the man behind the curtain. Actually it was a really fun gig-that's Wycliffe Gordon on trombone and he and other brass were tearing it up. You'd think I look like Quasimodo. A clear indicator when you are the low man on the totem pole. I was just luck there wasn't a nearby closet they'd put me in lol. You know I bet if I had been wearing my Fired Up t-shirt I would have been front and center ;) I look marvelous in black.

Maybe this is another reason I went to the 28”. If no one is gonna see me, I might as well be obscured completely. I’ll show them!

So here's a funny one from my past. I played an event at a church lock-in for a bunch of a teenagers (I was like 40 in this video) and because my buddy (electric guitar) wanted to get some video of the event, we recorded it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcjYsshvdO4

As you can see, even when someone isn't standing in front of me, there's a post from the stair rail, perfectly placed and completely obscuring me.

And here's the kicker - guess who set up the camera. I DID! LOL!

Doe anyone here besides me think that with some players...they stand there deliberately, being fully aware that they are obscuring the drummer, so that they get more attention?

I hope I am wrong about this.

I think some cameras are set up before the show and don't realize what is in view. Other players also move about and we drummers are stuck in one spot..For years I have wanted to make a movie entitled "Tubs" where all of the movie would just be video of the drummer. I tried to get access to one venue here but got no response.

Hey I'm seeing a pattern here-like WTF? I'm with Larry is there some conspiracy? I'm seeing a meme develop-we should all wear paper bags in protest-the Unknown Drummer. #DrummersGetNoRespect-Unknown Drummer. Sadly if we walked off in protest-they'd just replace us with a drum machine- god forbid the ultimate insult. I'm with Matt-go bigger-they can't ignore us forever.

Since I sing some leads in the bands that i'm involved in, the guys do try to keep a line of vision to me, somewhat. It's always a challenge. I'd like to start using a drum riser, to help with this and to make a better stage presentation, I'm just struggling with the added gear to carry into these smaller venues.

It's not a conspiracy, nobody really cares about us except other drummers who DO want to watch us play - and they can't because everyone else ignorantly stands right in front of us. We might as well be a damned drum machine at times!

The only drummer I've ever be able to watch for an entire concert was Frank Beard. Billy and Dusty do well at not standing directly in front of him.

I haven't been in as many bands as you, but my view is YES it is true. But I'm a little more introverted and actually like to be behind the scene. Others go out of their way to be seen.

Am currently in a 6/7 member band. I pointed out to them we would save a lot of space if another member lined up next to me 'in the back'... like keyboards, or bass. NO way.

Andy's pics are typical.
Dude who's singer is posting band pics with old drummer- totally unacceptable.

Another fave of mine is how when you setup, no matter how large the stage area, other nearby band members crowd you in with their shit.

Nah, I think I like the anonymity. (Actually, in my small town, I'm anything but anonymous, so maybe this is the public getting a break from seeing me everywhere!)

Guys, I'm loving the replies & pictures here - a long overdue levity thread methinks :)

I'm just set on a journey, so replies will be difficult for the next week, but I'll chime in when I can.

Already one there Jim, but it's very subtle (gloss black on matt black).

I must be really lucky with the musicians I meet, because I can't count how many times I've played with bands that asked me to actually put the drums out in front of everyone else. If it's up to me, I'm more comfortable sitting in the back, behind the others.

Being left out of the band photo is a low blow, though!

Yeah, how did you even play with a costume mouse head on? I feel like I'd be so disoriented. And breathing, that might freak me out. Did you have mouse hand gloves on too? I assume, like many of us, you already owned mouse hand gloves even before you took the gig? Very curious all the sudden.

For me it's mostly because I like to see everyone. Being in front was annoying and it's hard to turn around and convey something while you're sitting whereas a standing string player is much more mobile.

Christ with looks like yours of course they're gona put you up front, show off the goods! Great I got religious again, 'this' close to getting the dreaded knock on my door from Grunt with arms crossed and a stern "tisk tisk" look on his face. This is my nightmare, this is what keeps me up at night.

I almost can't imagine that, based on every single one of my experiences lol.

Ah, the grass...it's always greener. The women are prettier. The food is better. The air is cleaner. The music is better. The water is pure.

For the want of happiness...it's out there, but it's not here.

So when does here...become there?

PS Andy, they are without doubt the best photos I ever saw of you.

PSYCHE! LOL!

What we need is a mobile drumset.
