What kind of snare is this?...

I recently saw a video of a drummer playing this snare. The interesting thing to me is that the top rim sits well below the top of the drum so that there's no striking the rim. Does anyone know what kind it is?...it sounded incredible. Thanks!

It is obviously made for playing with the hands as sticks. And he has brushes at the time.

yeah I wouldn't beat that head with sticks. maybe he cut down an old conga to make that?

It looks like a version of the Remo Mondo snare.

Thanks, guys! I've seen the Mondo Snare before...sounds a little more world-esque than the snare I pictured. Could be the micing, eq, the player...who knows.

I think you could make any snare look like that with an over sized skin drum head.

.

O.K. let's try this - Holland Drums "Muffin top Snare". Seems to use whatever hardware is available.
