Evans experts -- Looking for Strata information

I've been looking into a calfskin type of head from Evans and am interested in trying the Strata heads.

After looking at the website, I see there is a tom batter head and a separate snare batter head. Can anyone tell me the difference between the 14" tom batter and the snare batter? I'm sure there's some difference, it seems odd to make two separate heads for tom and snare.

I have been using the Stratta 1000 on my snare, and really like it. I don't have one on a tom, so can't comment on that. but, they are good heads and have good life so far.

I'll let Evans Specialist confirm, but I suspect that head - like others in Evans; line-up - was simply cross-referenced in its possible applications, much like a coated G1 can be a tom head, or a snare batter.

Bermuda

Hi Brady,

Bermuda is correct. The Strata heads shown for toms are the same construction as the ones for snare. However, we do offer a Staccato version for 14" drums (specifically concert snare, but could work for drum set snare as well) with an overtone control ring on the underside of the head. Both the Staccato and the non-muffled version are available in 7mil thickness for greater sensitivity as well.

Cheers!

Thanks guys!

I thought that may be the case. It seemed a little redundant to make a 14" tom head and a 14" snare head. Having a model with an overtone control ring makes sense though.

One more question...(should've thought of this before...)

What is the coating on the Strata? Is it the same as the G1's? Is the film itself a different color, hence the brown tint or what? Actually, that's 3 questions, sorry...

The Strata are most similar to Remo Renaissance heads. It's a textured head, not so much a coating. I've seen/played them on timpani and bass drums but not yet snares/drum sets. They are resonant with a softer attack than clear heads

After trying Earthone heads (real calf skin), I've noticed that nothing on the conventional market sounds or feels like the real skin heads do. The closest probably is the Fiberskyn Ambassadors in sound, but the Skyntones in feel. I've got an Earthtone head on a vintage Gretsch snare I've restored and I compared it with a Skyntone head on my Sonor snare. I love Evans' products too, but they haven't got much in the way of calf-like heads really. The J1s aren't as close as they say they are, but they are nice heads too.

My vote is for the Strata 1000

I'm pretty much leaning that way. I've been using the Aquarian Modern Vintage heads for a while but have been looking at Evans as an alternative. I really like the Aquarian heads but the availability issue has me looking at Evans. Ironically the Strata heads aren't widely available either.

I want to be able to go buy a head without having to resort to Guitar Center or Musicians Friend.

Strata is in fact a unique coating, not a difference in film. It's applied in the same method that our white and frost coatings are applied.

Regarding calf and synthetic alternatives, the Strata heads have a similar coloration but are more open-sounding than calf. J1's aren't meant to be like calf, they're an alternative texture for brushes. Having experimented with calf and a variety of synthetic alternatives, I've yet to play anything the feels like and sounds like calf enough to close your eyes and not be able to tell which one is or isn't.
