Default New at Disneyland!

Here's some drum porn for ya' - there was a time in New Orleans square on the French Market stage that we had bands up there without drums. Well, we've circled around again and are now having bands with drums. This kit was put up about a week ago and the guys have them sounding great. It even matches the decor of the period in the area. A bop kit of Yamaha Club Custom drums (18/12/14/14 snare). We're big on 'theme', so a solid color kit in black or white might not look cool. Wood would be cool, but something like this that almost looks black oyster-ish, yet isn't a plastic wrap that will suffer by living in the sun is perfect. This kit will live on this stage and never get broken down. The stage is actually lowered into the ground nightly for storage. Enjoy!

I have thought about getting one of these, but the crazy wood mix on them has got me a mite concerned. Take a spin on 'em sometime and let me know, will ya?

Hmm. I know I like how they look. I wasn't aware of the mix of woods. I'll have to research this. But I guarantee you the guys playing this kit made it sound exactly like a Gretsch bop kit from the 50s - or what you thought you heard whenever you listened to Max Roach or Tony Williams in the 60s ;)

These are made of 100% Kapur , which is harder than maple. They are not mixed woods, could you be getting these confused with the Pearl Session which are birch/ kapur shells ? These are some of the most favorably reviewed drums right now. Everyone I have talked to that has played or owned a kit loves them.

That's a very nice kit! I love Yamaha. I think the 4 brands I'd like to have a kit of is Gretsch (have 2), Ludwig, Yamaha, and Tama. Those are the brands that get my blood flowing.

Rick is right. They're 100% Kapur. Yamaha refer to the Phoenix as to where the idea came from to use Kapur for Club Custom shells:

The sound of Kapur is now available in a brand new series of drums— the new Club Custom.
Made from 100% Kapur the Club Custom drums provide musicians with a new tonality for creating great music. Warm and dry they play well with a wide variety of musical styles. Sound balance is great making them perfect for use in the recording studio, and they have a soft, mild character that lays down exceptionally well behind vocals. Besides sounding great, Club Custom drums look great too with three special “Swirl” finishes and two “Matte Wood” finishes to choose from. Club Custom drums offer a fresh, unique sound that opens up a whole new range of tonal possibilities for the drummer.

Sweet! I love the look and the fact that they lower them into the ground for nighty storage is just too cool.

Fine looking kit in great sizes.

I read somewhere, (maybe here), about the interesting way the finish is applied - by spinning the drum and holding ropes against it. The end result looks pretty nice.

Kapur has a janka hardness of 1230 or so, similar to birch, and softer than NA sugar maple at around 1450.

A vintage style painted drum head would really give that set a cool NOLA vibe, even a fibersyn with no logo

Ya, I must've been thinking of the PHX. In any case, I'm starting to think that kit would be a very interesting voice in the crowd... especially some of the quirkier gigs I play. Hmmm.

Yeah, the whole stage is a big elevator and I have the keys. Sometimes I store the musicians down there too;)

Here's a quick video from the yamaha Facebook page. They are very likely EQ'd in this video, but I hear a big, open, classic rock sound... Matt, what do you think?

Please give us a review/ opinion when you've heard/ played them a bit.
Thinking about selling my DW Collectors kit for this set , and I want those sizes too.

Well I'll go ya one more here.

Bo - I was actually at Disneyland about a week and few days ago and saw this jazz band during dinner, right up front.. Thought about you and figured you might have something to do with this set being here. :)

You are also right in that the cymbals and drums did sound retro-Gretsch boppish. The drummer was a very good jazz player as well.

Can you elaborate on the heads and cymbals on this set (or at least the cymbals the drummer was using)?

Jim

Well, to be honest, I didn't have anything to do with getting them on the stage. We sponsored by Yamaha and they supply all the instruments and audio gear. I did mention to a manager that we need a vintage-looking bop kit up on stage after the first time they borrowed the big white rock kit we had on another stage. So it just took a bit for Yamaha to get this one out to us. Can't tell you how dumb it looked with a big white five-piece with power toms......
