hey guys. if I'm recording with one mic is it better to put it directly in front of the kit or off to the side?

Here are three options for using one mic.

What kind of mic are you using?

With all three options, have the mic generally pointed towards the snare. (2 of which are generally the same, but one might sound better than the other to you).

Mic in front=more bass drum boom
Mic to rer oblique=more snare and bass drum 'attack'

The majority of the sound comes from the edges, think of the sound emanating from the center hole, across, and out the edges. Mic above the cymbals will help eliminate the harshness and get more into the mic than just cymbals.

Micing above will get the sound of the cymbals at a glancing blow, rather than a direct blow.
