Why not? :)
You could also mount it on another crash or something for trashy effects. |

Search for Benny Greb's groovy solo on YouTube (the one where he plays in his living room, from the 'Language of Drumming').

I'd guess that they would sound pretty good tightly closed together, a nice clicking little auxiliary hat!

I have two A. Zildjian 10" Splash cymbals from the mid-70's that are sitting on one of my hi-hat stands as I write this. "Splash Hats" is quite an appropriate term for them. Very unique sound !!

Do it. Hats are one of the few cymbals we can tune and control by mixing things up. My most used "normal" hats are 13 1/4 Zildjian K Hybrids and 14 Paiste Signature SE. However, I love to mix and match as I see fit. A 17 Paiste Signature Fast Crash above a 17 Zildjian Z Custom Rock Crash. Reversed is better for faster response. A 10 Paiste Signature Dark Energy Mk I Splash over or under a 10 or 12 A Custom Splash. An 18 Zildjian A China Low below a 16 or 17 Paiste Signature Fast Crash or A Custom Crash. My new favorite is an 18 Sabian HH Medium Crash over a 17 Zildjian Z Custom Rock Crash. The Z Custom has never actually been used as a crash. Have fun with it. I forgot to mention: they don't have to be the same size. Even if they are named as 17 or 18 the profile holds a great deal of importance. On the last combo I listed the top "hat" overlaps the bottom.

I love the idea, I've also heard of using crashes to make "crash hats" to use on an X hat stand.

That is correct! I've been using two 18" crashes as hi hats on my remote stand for 5 years now. Currently, for the bottom hat I use a Paiste Signature Heavy Full crash and the top a Paiste Signature Fast crash. Every once in a while I'll switch up the combo. When I first made the hats, I was using a broken Paiste Innovations Medium China as the bottom hat. Niiiiice!

"Splash-hats" ... I like it, now I have a name for them
Paiste 12" Alpha splash over a 12' Alpha power splash |

Yes, why not.. I did it many time, but if possible, try to get a heavier one as a bottom splash.. I use an 8 Paiste accent cymbal as a bottom (its heavy!!!) for thin splashes.. or you can get an 8 Meinl Classics bell as a bottom splash too... but two thin splashes may sound good as mini trash hats.
Today I play this combination (auxiliary hats): A Murat Diril 10 splash as a top, and a Paiste 802 crash cut to 10 as a bottom.. sound terrific, excelent.. see my pictures: ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us No limits!! try all what you can... good luck |

Go for it. Nothing wrong with experimentation. You won't find out, unless you do it. I have a set of 10" Zildjian Special Recording hats, and I love 'em. Perfect for certain applications.
