Default Weezer plays Rosanna..

And i like..!

With more than enough respect to the original version and with just enough a typical 'clumsy' (could not think of another word, but is meant very positive) Weezer-flavour..

In my opinion worth to check out..

It sounds good to me! First time I've heard it.

The singing was kinda lackluster, but everything else was spot on.

For some reason it just sounds to me like the drummer is struggling to squeeze all the beats into the bar.

If this was an attempt to do someting good, I'd probably choose to do a completely different version.

Probably charming to fans of the band. Maybe. Just sounds terribly disjointed to me. Shoes were not filled.

Yeah. Terrible Grammy award winning band covering a tune they like. For shame. Boo this band. They obviously don't know what they're doing. Maybe they will come and ask drummerworld.com for some advice.

After listening to some of it I agree, they should've come to DW and got advise.

It definitely shows TOTO's high level of professionalism, and WEEZER'S lesser level of same.

I thought this was a Spinal Tap version with ghost notes that go to 11.

Why am i not surprised about replies like this..lol..never touch a Porcaro drumpart on a drummersforum..

And ofcourse i agree that this is not Porcaro-level, but thats not the idea..

This is Weezer, not Toto, and they for sure produce a hell of a lot better (own) version than 99,9% of all those rockcoverbands that claim to play close to the original one..People are allowed to disagree, but mostly when i see those people play themselves, i only think..tsjah..

And when speaking about a level of professionalism..Just to be clear, i am not considering myself a Weezer-fan or something like that..But in my opinion those first 2-3 albums from Weezer are an essential thing to listen if you want to know something about poprock/powerpop drumming, just like The Seventh One from Toto is an essential thing to listen..

But besides that, Toto themselves are also sounding allready 20 years like their own (boring) coverband..But then again, thats just my own humble opinion..lol..

I like Weezer, and their first albums (blue, Pinkerton, green and Make Believe) are still on my playlist from time to time.
Those songs are great for drum students (kids I mean), I use them regularly. But I don't like this cover too much to be
honest, and I agree that it's kind of a strange song choice, and also, to me, it's too much of a detailed copy.

"It sucks"
"HATER! *sniff*"

Word is this cover was a joke response to a Wheezer fan petition that Wheezer cover Toto's "Africa".... Or maybe it was a "World's Loudest Ghost Note Competition"?

*snicker*

Not a fan of Wheezer or Toto so.....

Did anybody bother to read up on this and see that there was a (joking) fan request for Weezer to cover Africa by Toto. They decided on Rosanna as a joke.

Personally, I am not a fan of this version, but then I thoroughly dislike Toto - not their musicianship (they are amazing musicians), but rather their actual songs- so it doesn't bother me at all that this is not a great version.

I don't think they did nearly enough to make it their Own. Not sure why they covered it that way.

Was that what they were really trying to do? Make it their own?

Or were they simply covering it?

I honestly didn't mean it to be mean or to come across all high and mighty. The drummer is way closer to getting it than I'll ever be. But Porcaro's groove is Porcaro's groove, I've never heard anyone else really 'nail' it. And while this guy is technically hitting the beats it just feels ... I don't know. Full? Overflowing? "Too many notes", as they say in Amadeus.

Reminds me of "Love Is the Seventh Wave" by Sting. That's a Police song by every right, and although Omar Hakim is a great drummer he just cannot play a Stewart Copeland groove like Stewart Copeland.

I think it sounds fine, but I don't give a crap about the source material. I've never seen what the big deal about the song was (nifty half time shuffle aside), or the band for the matter. Fluffed up adult contemporary to my ears.

Definitely a huge crime against humanity that the ghost notes don't sound exactly the same as the original, or that the singer hits the notes a bit differently. Also, the bigger, more distorted guitars. It's almost as if it's a different band playing the song!

In all seriousness, he could be nailing that shuffle, but after all sorts of compression, what's coming out of the speakers might be a bit different than in the room.

Might be interesting to know a bit more back story. Is this something they just decided to do on a lark and banged it out in a few hours?

Jeez, seemingly lots of pro musicians on here without a grammy, or recording contract or an audience, who could do it better (and not understand the band's irony in the backstory).

Oh please....save the sanctimonious offense lol....

No requirement to be a pro anything let alne have a grammy to have an opinion.

If it worked that way you would need to have a grammy to have an opinion on what was good or bad.

Consumers have a right to an opinion. I consume, I opine....lol.

Wheezer is having fun and we are having fun. No one lost an eye (yet).

Sorry if my sarcasm got in your nose hairs. I never said nobody couldn't have an opinion. I certainly voiced mine too. There seems to be a lot of unnecessary hate.
No sanctimony here either. I'm an amateur hack too just like you. But I mean c'mon, step back and look at it - amateur musicians warring away on their keyboards evaluating a pro drummers improper ghost notes.
People could be more positive musicians by not dissing one another, pro or not.

WOW this is a tough crowd...

I thought it sounded excellent. I didn't know their drummer was that proficient, to tell the truth. I'm impressed - but clearly in the minority.

Could I do better? Hell no. It's interesting to note how many people on here are convinced that they could...and I can't help but wonder how many of them are wrong and don't even know it.

Well, they also did "Africa" and dropped it today. And in my opinion, it's fine - better than a lot of the other covers of it I've heard in the last year.

Agree...hate the song (sorry if that offends anyone lol), BUT thought their cover was great-much better as a cover than the Rosanna cover.

But is just nice to see that a lot of people have an automatic critical opinion when the 'holy' Rosanna is played by someone else than Porcaro..

And yes, then is also just nice to realise that the majority of those people would fail ten times more if they would have to play this themselves..

I like jam bands doing covers-some are really great. Maybe not this one. Tough crowd-reminds me of grad school we had a journal club. Faculty and grad students attended and each week we'd take turns bringing some peer-reviewed article that was interesting and we'd talk about it and critique it. We had articles on all kinds of topics, from top tier journals to lesser, and no article ever made it unscathed-it was brutal. But in the case of art and music if you get too critical it seems you suck the fun and life out of it-take the Rolling Stones you could have a field day criticizing these guys (and some well earned-they've done some really bad concerts over the years and some mediocre albums) but decades later they are still rocking and popular (I've always liked their rowdy rough around the edge).

The Rosanna groove is a "coming of age" groove for many drummers. It's also one of the most popular grooves in modern drumming. To hear it played poorly will surly get a negative reaction by many.

In this case the ghost notes are way off the mark.

The Africa cover was definitely better, it has some interesting subtle differences which make it reasonably unique.

The Rosanna cover though.. more like the Poorcaro shuffle.

The Rosanna cover wasnít my favorite. Jeffís groove is a classic, and itís really noticeable when itís a little off. I felt his ghost notes were dragging, giving the groove a way sloppier feel. Some more nitpicking, I thought his snare was too ringy for the groove. Donít get me wrong, I love my snares to ring, but Jeffís snare sound probably came more from the muffling which really accentuated the ghost notes. In the Weezer version, you more hear the ring of the snare instead of the snare wires themselves.
I did like the Africa cover a lot better, however.

You're right, his ghost notes sound laboured and it's more noticeable because of how unsubtle he's playing them. It's supposed to be a loping pattern that purrs away smoothly under the main backbeat. He's playing each middle partial of each triplet on the snare quite strong that they're almost as loud as his main backbeat on beat 3.

I found a picture of him during the recording of Rosanna. Now I can see why he struggled to play them softer.

Hmmm... Overall I think itís a cute little cover - with some Weezer charm - itís nice. Whether someone likes it or not is up to them - art is subjective.

But - on a more objective tip - as a drum forum full of drummers, we all have to agree that this was not a grooving drum part. Yes, Jeffís part is iconic but even if I never heard Totoís version and thought this was a Weezer song - I wouldnít make it through the first four bars.

For this cover I didnít expect their guitar player to ape Lukatherís parts - they are no small task - and I think Weezer was just trying to have some fun. Also, without his parts, the song is still there. But Jeffís part on the other hand is the song. Itís the first thing you hear and it sets the tone for everything that follows...

I omitted my comments because some folks were so very easily offended by my not liking a song. It wasn't worth the unnecessary energy to defend myself, so I just omitted my comments.

Thats the idea, nothing more nothing less..

Allthough i actually like the chorusses much more than from the original version..The guitar parts from Lukather with Toto are almost never sounding very powerful to my ears..On his solo albums (Twist The Knife..!) is much better..
