Do you have a PA?

I'm a reasonable guy. I play in the pocket. I'm not some youngster trying to be "the" band instead of being "in" the band. But in my opinion, depending on the type of music and size of venue, the guitarists and bassists can often easily drown out the drummer. So to make sure I'm loud enough I usually have one of my friends play a song on the drums with the rest of the band playing along and I stand out in the audience area to make sure everything (drums/bass/guitar/vocals) sounds right.

I agree, there are times when the drums need to be amplified. Practices, coffeehouses, restaurants, back yards and most of the gigs non-pro drummers play, however, are not those times.
