Crappy Humpday, folks! :( The video file of today's wake 'n break was corrupting in my video editor, so I had to work around it by recording the screen of my laptop with my phone.

Anyway, today's wake 'n break is a boom chick groove with an oddly staggered rim pattern as well as anticipated snare drum accents. Taking our feet first, we have what I refer to as the "boom chick" ostinato with our bass drum falling on 1 and 3 while our hi-hats are falling on 2 and 4. Now let's take a look at the rims. First we have the rim of the bass drum falling on the "and" of 1 and on the "and" of 3, followed by the rim of the snare drum falling on 2 and 4. Moving along, we have hi-hat notes falling on the "a" of 1 and on the "a" of 3 and last but not least, our snare drum has an accent on the "and" of 4. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a two bar waltz groove where we have snare accents on both a downbeat and an upbeat. Taking our feet first, our bass drum is falling on "1&" while our hi-hats are being chicked on 2 and 3. Next, our ride cymbal has a steady slew of eighth notes on "1&2&3&" throughout both bars. Last but not least, our snare drum is falling on 3 in the first bar and then on the "and" of 2 in the second bar. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Thank goodness it's Friday-ay-ay-ay, folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is an uptempo groove that is broken up among the ride and snare groove with no bass drum notes in the first half of the bar. Starting with our ride cymbal first, we have notes falling on "1e", "2e", on 3, and on 4. Next, our snare drum has accented notes falling on the "and" of 2 and on the "and" of 4, with ghost notes falling on the "&a" of 1 as well as on the "a" of 3. Now let's take a look at our bass drum, which has notes falling on 3 and 4. Last but not least, our hi-hats are falling on all of the upbeats or "and's". As always, I hope you dig it and have a great weekend!

Hey folks! :) I hope everyone's weekend is going well. Today's wake 'n break is a sixteenth note boom bap beat with singles broken up between the snare drum and a bell that was once part of a set of African ogene. First thing to note is that this groove starts with a pickup on the "a" of 4. Starting with the hi-hats, we have our pickup with an open note on the "a" of 4 , followed by notes on "1e&a", "2e&a", on 3, and on the "e&a" of 4, with openings on the "a" of 2 and on the "a" of 4. Next, our bass drum has the pickup on the "a" of 4, followed by notes on the "e&" of 1, the "a" of 2, the "e&a" of 3, and on the "a" of 4. Moving along, we have a short slew of 32nd note singles broken up between the bell and snare, starting on the bell which is falling on the "e&a" of 3. Last but not least, our snare drum has accented notes on 2 and 4. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

It's Sunday Drumday-ay-ay-ay, folks! Today's wake 'n break is a backbeat that is built around double strokes on the snare and hi-hats. Taking our bass drum first, we only have notes falling on "1&". Next, our hi-hats are falling on "1e" and on "3e". Last but not least, our snare drum is falling on the "&a" of each beat. As always, I hope you dig it and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

A new week is upon us once again, folks! :) Today's wake 'n break starts with a buzz stroke on the hi-hats and upbeat accents on the snare drum. This groove does not have a bass drum on the 1, so it is extremely easy to turn around the bass drum and hi-hat parts by mistake. Taking our hi-hats first, we have buzzed strokes on "1e" and on "3e", as well as notes on the "and" of 1, "2&", the "and" of 3, and on "4&". There are also open notes on the "and" of 2 and on the "and" of 4. Moving along to the bass drum, we have notes falling on the "&a" of 1, on 2, the "&a" of 3, and on 4. Last but not least, our snare drum has accented notes on the "and" of 2 and on the "and" of 4. As always, I hope you dig it and here's to everyone's week starting off on the good foot!

Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is built around a busy bass drum pattern and can easily be felt in both 6/8 or 3/4, but I'll be breaking it down in 6/8. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on "1&", the "and" of 2, on 3, on "4&", the "and" of 5, and on 6. Looking at our hi-hats next, we have notes falling on 1 and 3 with an open note on 3. Moving along to the ride cymbal, we have a single bell accent on 5 and last but not least, our snare drum has a single accented note on 5. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Happy Humpday-ay-ay-ay, folks! 🐪 Today's wake 'n break is a baiao inspired groove that utilizes a Hammerax splash vine, which consists of three different pitched splashes. Taking our feet first, we have the traditional baiao ostinato with our bass drum falling on 1 and the "a" of 1, the "and" of 2, on 3 and the "a" of 3, and on the "and" of 4, while our hi-hats are falling on all of the upbeats or "and's". Moving along to the splash vine, the highest pitched splash has a single note on 1. Next, the middle splash is falling on the "a" of 1 and on 4, and our third and lowest pitched splash is falling on the "e" of 3. Last but not least, we come to our snare drum, where we have accented notes on the "and" of 2 and on 4, with ghost notes on the "e&" of 1, the "&a" of 3, and on the "a" of 4. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Sorry for the lack of transcriptions recently. I ran out of staff paper and never got to the store last week to replace it. No worries, they're coming back!

Thank goodness it's Friday-ay-ay-ay! :) Today's wake 'n break is a mainly linear and somewhat staggered backbeat with short sixteenth note triplet phrases broken up between the hi-hat, snare drum, and bass drum. In this groove, we'll be counting sixteenth note triplets as: "1 trip let & trip let". Taking our hi-hats first, we have notes falling on 1 and 3, as well as open notes on the "and" of 2 and on the "and" of 4. Next, our snare drum has accented notes on 2 and 4, as well as ghost notes on the first "trip" and "let" of both 1 and 3. Last but not least, our bass drum is falling on the first "let" of both 1 and 3, as well as on the "and" of both 1 and 3. As always, I hope you dig it and have a great weekend!

Happy Humpday-ay-ay-ay, folks! 🐪 Today's wake 'n break is an interesting groove that is built around short 32nd note bursts on the snare drum. This one is definitely better for more aggressive styles. Taking our snare drum first, we have short 32nd note bursts starting on 1 and ending on the "e" of 1, starting on the "and" of 2 and ending on the "a" of 2, and then one more starting on 3 and ending on the "e" of 3. Looking at the bass drum next, we have notes falling on the "a" of 1, the "e&" of 2, on 3 and the "a" of 3, and on the "e&" of 4. Last but not least, our hi-hats are keeping a quarter note pulse on "1, 2, 3, and 4". As always, I hope you dig it and hang in there because we're already halfway through the workweek!

It's Sunday Drumday-ay-ay-ay, folks! 🥁🥁 Today's wake 'n break is a dirty sixteenth note backbeat that utilizes a one of a kind foot activated tamborim machine that was custom built for me by Ron DeFrancesco of Francesco Percussion and Samba Novo. Taking our hi-hats first, we have a steady slew of sixteenth notes on "1e&a, 2e&a, 3e&a, 4e&a". Next, our bass drum is falling on "1e&a" and on the "e&a" of 3. Moving along to the snare drum, we have accented notes on 2 and 4, as well as ghost notes on the "e&a" of 2 and on the "e&a" of 4. Last but not least, the tamborims are being played on all of the upbeats or "and's". As always, I hope you dig it and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

A new week is upon us once again. :) Since I just picked up this new toy, today's wake 'n break is another backbeat groove that utilizes my new tamborim machine (this time, using a hand to play two of the four tamborims). Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on "1&" and on "3&". Next, our hi-hats are falling on "1e&a" and on "3e&a" with open notes on the "a" of 1 and on the "a" of 3. Moving along to the snare drum, we have accented notes providing us with our backbeat on 2 and 4. Last but not least, our tamborims have 32nd notes starting on 2 and ending on the "e" of 2, followed by notes on the "&a" of 2, and then more 32nd notes starting on 4 and ending on the "e" of 4, followed by a note on the "and" of 4. As always, I hope you dig it and here's to everyone's week starting off on the good foot!

Hey-ey-ey-ey, folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a dual hi-hat groove with a quarter note pulse and an anticipated snare accent. The auxiliary hi-hats can be replaced with whatever sound you would like (stacks work great). Taking our auxiliary hi-hats first, we have a quarter note pulse on 1, 2, 3, and 4. Next, our bass drum is falling on 1 and the "a" of 1 as well as on 4. Moving along to the snare drum, we have accented notes on the "e" of 2 and on 4. Last but not least, our hi-hats are being chicked on all of the downbeats with open notes being played on 1 and on the "and" of 3. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

After having no internet all damn day, I have finally managed to upload today's wake 'n break, which is an extremely laid back and wide open groove with a triplet stagger. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1, on the "trip" of 3, and on the "trip" of 4. Next, our hi-hats have notes falling on 1, followed by sixteenth note triplets (counting: 1 trip let & trip let) on the "& trip let" of 1, on 2, an open note on the "and" of 2, a chick on 3, and then notes on the "trip" and "let" of 3 as well as on "4 trip let". Last but not least, our snare drum has accented notes on 2 and 4. As always, I hope you dig it and much love! NO DAYS OFF! #drums #wakenbreak

NOTE: No funny outro on today's video because my internet has been down all day. No internet equals no opportunity to scour the web for random clips.

Next, our main set of hi-hats has a steady slew of sixteenth notes on "1e&a, 2e&a, 3e&a, 4e&a" with an open note on the "and" of 2. We then have a short three note lick played between both sets of hi-hats. Last but not least, our snare drum is providing the groove with its backbeat on 2 and 4. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Sorry for the ridiculously late post but my internet connection is down yet again. 🤬 Today's wake 'n break is a slinky rumba inspired groove with a light touch and ghosted snare drum. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1 and the "a" of 1, the "a" of 2, and on the "and" of 3. Next, our ride cymbal is falling in unison with the bass drum, with an additional note on 4. Moving along to the snare drum, we have ghost notes on the "e&" of 1, on "2e", and on "3e", followed by a single accented note on 4, which is being played as a buzz stroke. We also have a ruff starting on the "a" of 4 and ending with the bass drum on 1. Last but not least, our hi-hats are being chicked on all of the upbeats or "and's". Shout out to Optimum Online!

Well folks, today marks four straight years of wake 'n break grooves. 🎉 That's zero days off! To celebrate, I came up with a two bar backbeat in 4/4, which is broken up between the bass drum and four tamborims. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes on 1 and "3&" in the first bar and then on 1, the "a" of 2, and on "3&" in the second bar. Next, I'm playing a steady slew of sixteenth notes broken up among the frames of four tamborims and last but not least, we have our tamborica providing the backbeat on 2 and 4 via a foot pedal. As always, I hope you dig it and much love. Thank you to everyone who has been taking this journey along with me and if you're new to the series, we have plenty of room for more! :)

It's Sunday Drumday-ay-ay-ay, folks! 🥁 Today's wake 'n break is a backbeat that is built around hi-hat doubles on the upbeats. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on "1&", the "and" of 2, on "3&", and on the "and" of 4. Next, our hi-hats have notes falling on the "&a" of each beat, with a quick open note thrown in on the "a" of 1. Last but not least, our snare has accented notes on 2 and 4, as well ghost notes on "1e" and on "3e". As always, I hope you dig it and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

A new week is upon us once again, folks! :) Today's wake 'n break takes a traditional two bar bembe in 6/8 and turns it into one bar of a 12/8 shuffle. Taking our feet first, we have our bass drum falling on 1, 3, 7, and 9. Meanwhile, our hi-hats are falling on 4, 6, 10, and 12. Next, our bell pattern is falling on 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12. Last but not least, our snare has accented notes on 4 and 10. As always, I hope you dig it and here's to everyone's week starting off on the good foot!

Happy Humpday-ay-ay-ay, folks! 🐪 First things first, I must apologize for the horrible camera angle. My youngest nephew was hanging out in the corner and bumped into the table while I was recording. lol Anyway, today's wake 'n break is built around two sets of hi-hats, with the main set being chicked on the upbeats while our auxiliary hats have a single note. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1 and the "a" of 1, the "a" of 3, and on the "and" of 4. Next, our main set of hats are falling on all of the upbeats or "and's". Moving along to the auxiliary hats, we have a single note on 2 and last but not least, our snare drum has an anticipated accent on the "a" of 2. As always, I hope you dig it and hang in there because we're already halfway through the workweek!

Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Since group member Stephen Silvia asked a question pertaining to hi-hat splashing, I felt inspired to come up with a wake 'n break groove that utilizes the technique. It's a drum 'n bass groove that is broken up between the bass drum, hi-hats, and tamborica (which is replacing a typical dnb snare part), and utilizes the flanging/splashing technique on the hi-hat pedal. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1, the "and" of 2, and on the "and" of 4. Next, our hi-hats are being splashed/flanged on 1 and 3. Last but not least, our tamborica is playing notes on "1&2&3&" and on "4e&a". As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Thank goodness it's Friday-ay-ay-ay! :) Today's wake 'n break is a swung groove with our bass drum and snare drum often falling in unison. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1, the "a" of 1, the "and" of 2, and on 4. Next, our hi-hats have chicks on all of the upbeats or "and's", with an additional open note on the "and" of 2. Hey-ey-ey-ey, folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a four on the floor groove that has both choked and open tones being played on the high tom, as well as splashed hi-hat notes. Taking our feet first, the bass drum has a quarter note pulse being played on 1, 2, 3, and 4. Meanwhile, our hi-hats are being splashed on 2 and chicked on 4. Moving along to the high tom, we have notes falling on "1 trip let", 2, 3, 4, and on the "let" of 4, starting with slightly choked notes and finishing with a completely open tone. Last but not least, our snare drum has a single accented note on 3. As always, I hope you dig it and enjoy your weekend!

A new week is upon us once again, folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is an odd time, quasi-linear groove in 5/4, meaning that the groove is mainly linear minus one or two hits. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1, the "and" of 4, and on 5. Next, the bell of the ride cymbal is falling on the "and" of 1, on "2&", the "and" of 3, and on 4. Moving along to the snare drum, we have a single accented note on 3 and last but not least, our hi-hats are being chicked on 2, 3, and 4. As always, I hope you dig it and here's to everyone's week starting off on the good foot!

Hey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a linear groove that is based upon the first bar of a two bar linear groove I came up with years ago, which I called "The Katz Pajamas", named after one of my teachers, Frank Katz. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1, the "a" of 1, the "and" of 2, the "e" of 3, and on the "e&" of 4. Next, our hi-hats have open notes on the "e" of 1, on 2 and the "a" of 2, the "and" of 3, followed by closed notes on "4e&". Last but not least, our snare drum is falling on the "and" of 1, the "e" of 2, on 3 and the "a" of 3, and on 4. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Happy Humpday-ay-ay-ay, folks! 🐪 Today's wake 'n break is a plodding 3/4 groove that utilizes a bow (which needs rosin) on the top hi-hat cymbal, as well as a brush. Taking the bass drum first, we have bass drums on 1, 2, and 3. Next, our top hi-hat cymbal is being bowed on the "and" of 1. Moving along to the bottom hi-hat, we have a struck note on the "and" of 3. Last but not least, our snare drum has a single note on the "and" of 2. As always, I hope you dig it and hang in there because we're already halfway through the workweek!

Hey-ey-ey-ey, folks! :) The bow experiments continue! Today's wake 'n break is an eerie sounding boom chick groove that utilizes a bow on a set of Pete Engelhart blossom bells. Taking the feet first, our bass drum is falling on 1 and 3 while our hi-hats are chicked on 2 and 4. Now we come to the blossom bells. At first, we have a lower pitched bowing starting on the "e" of 1 and ending on the "a" of 1, and finally, we have shorter and higher pitched bowing on the "a" of 2, the "and" of 3, and on the "e" of 4. As always, I hope you dig it and try and get yourself a bow to play around with!

Thank goodness it's Friday-ay-ay-ay! :) Today's wake 'n break is a funk groove that has a short lick moving clockwise across a tom and two cymbals. Looking at our feet first, our bass drum has notes falling on "1&" as well as on the "a" of 4. Meanwhile, our hi-hats playing a steady eighth note pulse on "1&2&3&4&". Moving along to the hands, our hi-hats are falling on 1 and the "&a" of 1, the "and" of 2, and on 3, with an open note on the "a" of 1. Next, our snare drum has accented notes on 2 and 4, as well as a ghost note on the "a" of 2. Moving along to the high tom, we have a single note on the "e" of 3. Next, our ride cymbal is falling on the "a" of 3 and last but not least, a second set of hi-hats are being struck on the "e" of 4. As always, I hope you dig it and enjoy your weekend!

Hey, folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a 3/4 waltz groove that is actually meant for more of a rock or even metal setting. Looking at our feet first, our bass drum is falling on "1&2&" while our hi-hats are falling on 2 and 3. Next, we have a second set of hi-hats (a stack works just as well, but use whatever you would like!) being played on 1 and 3 and last but not least, our snare drum has a single accented note on 3. As always, I hope you dig it and have a wonderful Saturday-ay-ay-ay!
