Default What is the slowest BPM song you enjoy playing

So I'm getting cabin fever and getting a little goofy.

(and this is going to make some speed/death metal players heads explode)

Sitting here listening to chill out music, I was thinking, what is the slowest song that I still enjoy playing? Then what is that BPM?

I would say my bottom limit would be in the 60's BPM range.
In my rotating song list I practice too, Sigur Ros - Svefn-g-englar and it looks to be about 68 BPM. That about pegs my enjoyment meter of playing that slow of a song.

I'm sure there are slower songs out there ya'll enjoy playing?

As a death metal guy. I play in the 180-240 range a ton.. but I love the 70-100 range myself when i'm playing other stuff or grooving. id say 50-60... probibly closer to 60. 50 gets tough holding it back.

although, BPM is relative. I can change the subdivision in 200 to feel like 50, and I can also make 50 BPM sound like I'm ripping super fast music.. All BPM is is a click in my ear.

One of the things I always liked most about type o negative was how slow some of the songs are.

I just tapped out "Love you to death" and it came in at quarter note around 55bpm. Less than one per second.

It's kinda hard to play with that much space sometimes and stay solid. I was mesmerized watching them live.

Actually learning that the old albums had fake drums gutted me for a while. Seeing live was believing!

Same here. Playing slow can be very rewarding. It's nice to let a big fat groove just breathe. If it feels like it is too slow to play smoothly, I can always double up on the hats/ride.

I don't really try to play along with music note for note anymore. I just use the song as a click. If it is slow or fast isn't really a concern at this point. It's how I feel while at the kit. Some days I wanna go slow, others I just wanna run for a while.

(no explosion here, head still in tact)

I love Hendrix’ “Red House” at about 70 bpm, I think. It’s about as slow as I go...

Don't really have a lower tempo limit. I've practiced planty in the 40-50 BMP range.

Definetly have an upper limit, but it depends on the music. Fast swing is ok. Other stuff less so. The blast stuff...........I can take about two bars before I want to go home.

A great song.

Yes, they had some slow ones.

But What it comes down to subdividing.

Playing 16th notes at 50 bm is playing more than playing quarter notes at 70

The slowest I currently play is a ballad at 70 BPM.

It is sometimes a chore to keep it in check, both for the band members and myself. The acoustic guitarist wants to rush the intro, the vocalist wants to rush the vocals and I want to rush the big fills.

"If You Don't Know Me By Now", a remake by Simply Red. I think it's beats per hour on this one. Ha Ha

Do You still Remember by Aretha Franklin is pretty damn slow for me. Great song. BTW, I have never used a BPM measurement. hehe

Yea, that's kinda why I mentioned Type O. Not only are the QN BPM numbers often low, the amount of time between notes in some of the songs is really cool. They don't tend to stuff a bunch of notes in. The spaciousness of the songs is a feature!

My covers band does "Tennessee Whiskey" by Chris Stapleton, which Google says should be at 50 bpm; we do it maybe even a touch slower by my reckoning (between 43 and 46). Granted, it's in 12/8 feel.

Etta James' "At Last".

I clock it at 56 or so.

Ray Charles' "Georgia On My Mind"

I clock that at 62 or so.

I played Albatross by Fleetwood Mac on Friday. That’s pretty slow.

Last month we did ‘Crazy’ by Linda Ronstadt.

EDIT: Albatross is 66, Crazy is 75 BPM

Adding to Howard Roberts insight;
If I am learning something new, then as slow as I could play perfectly. There also is a too slow in which execution will suffer. So again, as slow as one can play without any mistakes.

56 to 60 is about as slow as I want to go.

Check this out for super sloooooow. A classic called Lil Darlin', I think they're around 47 to 50bpm here. Skip to 0:33.

Isn't this song more of a 3 or 6? Putting it faster? It's pretty waltzy and I've always played with that feel instead of slow 4.

AH !!! i Loooove slow 6/8 . welp 60 is always a blast but predictable ("a change gonna come" by Seal). 32 (31.9?) is fun with "if you dont know me by now" by Simply Red. the album performance is friggin beautiful / locked. then 38.5 on "youre still a young man" by TOP.

for 4/4 check "shame" by Tyrese at 58. bad ass.

There is also the difference between how a song is counted.

If you're playing a half time groove, the song will sound slower than the BPM.

"If You Don't Know Me By Now", a remake by Simply Red, I don't think it's actually that slow of a BPM, I think the drummer is just playing a half time beat.

If you listen to the guitars for where the 1 is, the temp is approx 94 BPM.
The snare is on 3, not 2 and 4.

Many slow ballads can easily be thought of in a similar way.

..The snare is on 3..

In that case you would be playing the song kinda like an English Waltz, 123 123, etc..

I see that song as 6/8, meaning the snare will be on 4, like 123456 123456, etc..

The Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes version too btw..

Edit.

Or you count that as a 6 over 4 polyrythm..?

In that case the snare would be indeed on 3..

Sorry, music and math is not my best part..lol..

No, it's certainly not a waltz.

4/4 with triplets is the same as 12/8.

You could count it either way.

A quick google search of the sheet music shows some places have it written at 6/8, some as 12/8.

But the point is, the BPM is not necessarily slow if you count it as a half time feel.

Correct..

Like i said after i edited my previous post, math and music are not my best part..

But playing the song like that would feel to me as if i would constantly play 6 over 4 and i am not feeling the song like that..

No, not 6 over 4

12 over 4.

4/4 with triplets. = 12 notes.

Just turn on a metronome to 4/4 at 94 BPM.

Then play the song.

It lines up.

Funeralopolis by Electric Wizard

A sweet, slow (and heavy) 63 BPM that just groves. It does pick up some speed later, but it takes some time ;P

Stoner/doom is fun. Even if you don't "partake".

It lines up..

This has been bugging me now for more than a week, spoke with several people about this, but untill now no one gets this..

The thing is that you said you hear the snare drum on 3 and not on 2 and 4..

I assume that you meant that you count the song in 12/8, because when counting in 6/8 the snare drum will be on 4..

I have no idea what you mean with putting the metronome to 4/4 at 94 BPM, because the song just can not be played in that way..The song can be played with the metronome to 4/4 at like 30 BPM, counting in 12/8 and then the snare drum will be normal on 2 and 4..Not on 3..

The only way i hear a snare drum on 3, is when i would play 6 over 4 (or 4 over 6 for that matter)..In that case each third note from the group of 4 will fall equal with each 4th note from the group of 6..

Below is a picture of the song written in 12/8, where the snare drum will be very clearly on 2 and 4..

Is there a possibility that you show some sort of transcription where there is the 6/8 feel of the drumpart, but where the notation shows clearly the snare drum on 3..?

Or can maybe anyone else shine a light on this..?

I used to like playing Amazing Grace when I had the church gig. We played it at about 60 BPM. It takes confidence to come in with a steady beat on a slow ballad, the first few times it was very nerve racking, I was so worried I'd screw it up.

I don't have any idea the BPM for the stuff we play... We tend to play more ballads than many of the other bar bands around here, so we do play plenty of slow songs.

I've found that playing slow AND playing well is perhaps tougher than playing fast, or what constitutes fast in my world. (No thrash/speed metal stuff in our repertoire, heh.) I do enjoy it, its simply a different challenge, to do the song justice.

Keeping the tempo in check is my biggest priority, as like many bands, we can have a tendency to speed things up too often. (Not just me, the other guys in the group, we take turns.) I've tried to really pay closer attention to this over the last year, especially after seeing videos folks have put up on Facebook of us playing. Sobering, sometimes.
