Default Trigger Controlled Light Show?

So I've had this idea for a long time, but don't really know if it is possible. Can a drum trigger be used to control a light? If it can turn vibration into sound via module, why not flash a light?

This idea came to me after seeing Pantera in 94. During Primal Concrete Sledge, white lights strobed in sync with Vinnie Paul's kicks. The effect was quite impressive, almost sensory overload.

So what do you think? Is there a way to do this, making the drummer also a light show?

Yes. I did this for a project that involved triggers on the snare and kick. A Y-splitter cable at the kick trigger sent a signal to an RGBW LED Controller with an audio/mic input. Each hit triggered LEDs inside the kick. No reason you couldn't send the signal to lights mounted elsewhere.

If you don't have triggers. You could do the same with the kick drum mic - split the mic signal to an LED controller.

There are LED kits available that cost a few hundred dollars. I bought all the individual parts off eBay for just under $40, including shipping.

Simple enough to trigger a light in each drum when it's struck, a company makes those (have seen them at NAMM either at Crush, ddrum or some booth like that.)

But going back a few decades, it would be simple enough to convert those old "color organ" light-show thingies that responded to music, with different colors responding dynamically to different frequencies. But there's probably an outboard gear device that does the same thing, only better.

So yes, it can be done, one way or the other.

It's been done.

Any trigger system that puts out midi (which would be most of them) could be routed to a midi light controller.

And I'm sure there are other ways to do it.

A google search shows a few "how to" videos.

Do a Google search for drum light triggers. And do a YouTube search. I just did. Several companies out there.

I remember to see one setup at the local show. Surprised to see on Google how many companies are doing this.

This may be achievable with DMXIS.

I've only made pre-programmed lights with MIDI. I don't see why you couldn't trigger it in real-time with MIDI.

I kind of interested in this. I have many hobbies, and one includes photography. I have studio strobes sitting there next to my kit. I've kind of wondered if there would be some way to connect the two.

There are sound sensitive camera triggers. Though, I'm not sure it would be possible to get a clean enough signal in a drum kit.

Getting the delay right would be the trick. Light travels fast.

I got a midi/DMX. system to kind of work but it would only turn the light on, then off and I wanted them to flash on/off. I found options out there but nothing SIMPLE, plug and play.

Sounds very tricky to find and setup a perfect one.

The Sunhouse Sensory Percussion system is perfect for stuff like this.

Ian Chang uses them for his sounds and lights:
