What's the thing called that holds the toms?

Hi guys, my drum set has 2 toms on the bass drum and a floor tom, like most sets. I'm looking to take tom 2 off and get another floor tom because I find it really awkward to do fast rolls while trying to go around the cymbals etc. when playing Green Day, especially. But when I take the second tom off, the thing that goes into the bass drum to hold them is sticking out and looks really weird. (if you don't know what i'm talking about, it's the silver thing that sits on the bass in this picture http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Drum_set.svg)

So does anyone know what it's called and if it's easy to find? Thanks

That's called a tom mount. Do you have a pic of yours? On my Sonor 3003s the mount for each tom can be removed seperately so an empty one isn't sticking out.

It's called a bass drum mounted double "tom mount".

Dennis

Turn the right hand one down all the way and it won't bother or you can remove it.

I can't take one part of it off, it's all one piece. I guess I would have to the replace it...is this the thing I should be looking for? http://www.amazon.com/Pearl-BT-3-To...8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1264536690&sr=8-6

Also, do you guys think i should do this? Does anyone here have theirs set up this way? I'm getting an 18' floor tom either way, but I just don't know if i should lose a drum up top over it...

or should I get something like what Tre Cool has for his mounted tom here?

I know I'm asking a lot of questions lol, but I've been wondering about this for a while now. I'm kind of new to it too... I've only been playing like 6 months and play pretty much all Green Day exclusively.

You have a similar mount to my mapex, you can take the right most tom off and you'll have to drop the arm out of the way.
Or you can do what I did and buy a clamp and single tom arm and mount the Tom off your cymbal stand so you can then remove that 'Y' mount.

The Pearl componant you've listed is not compatible. Gibraltar make single L tom arms in 10 or 12mm. You'll need to check what yours is and match it. If you buy a seperate clamp you'll be able to mount it off a cymbal stand like Tre is doing in the picture (actually, he's got his mounted off a sperate stand, but flying it off a cymbal stand acheives the same purpose). Or you can continue to use the one you have and just turn one arm down as has been suggested....look at the pic again, you'll see this is exactly what Mr. Cool has done!!

I'll probably buy a separate clamp and put it on a cymbal stand, but I'm not sure if I'll even do anything at all

It looks to me like he has a separate stand for his rack tom...nothing's attached to the bass.

Yep, I noted that. I do the same thing if I use a 2 up, 2 down set up. I put the stock double tom holder in the base of a cymbal stand and fly the toms as pictured (except there's 2 of them obviously). More often though, I'm lazy and only take a 1 up, 1 down rig in which case I just clamp a single tom arm off the cymbal stand. Either set up will work for what you're trying to achieve though.

If you like the position of the 1st rack tom where it is, and you're not hearing any ill effects of the weight of it all on the bass drum, leave it where it is, and either point the other L-arm down & in so as to be out of the way, or mount something else on it- cowbell, tamborine, adapter to put a cymbal arm on it [Gibraltar makes those], etc.

I can't take one part of it off, it's all one piece.

First off, look at the item. It has "moving parts" so it can't be one piece. Pull both rack toms off. Now, loosen one of the L-arm wing nuts. The L-arm will probably turn 180 degrees just from it's own weight.

Now, if you wanna be cool like Tre, pull the tom mount out of the kick. The downtube is probably 1" pipe. The 1st stage of all your cymbal stands (tri-pod bases, or bottoms) will probably accept/fit 1" pipe. So pull apart a cymbal stand, and see if your tom mount will fit into a cymbal base. If so, bingo, you are there.

Ok so I've been trying all possibilities with the hardware I already have for a few hours tonight and have gotten nowhere. I've also read everything everyone had said and I'm stuck between getting a new stand to hold the rack tom so that it doesn't shake the cymbal stand or whatever , like the one Tre has holding his rack tom here

or just getting an arm that will connect to a cymbal stand. I problem with that I think is that my nearest stand is almost two feet away....

I really hoped I would just be able to put it in my bass drum (buying whatever other arm I would need) but I've figured out no matter what I buy the tom will still be too close to me. It needs to sit back on the bass drum more.

So I don't know which one to do. It's really frustrating because I've been spending hours on this and haven't gotten very far.

If I were to get the stand, would i have to buy a cymbal stand and just take it apart to make it fit to the height i need it to be? And then buy an arm?

Here's what I was looking it for if I was going to attach it to a cymbal stand i already have: http://www.amazon.com/Gretsch-Drums...8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1265956877&sr=1-1

And with option 2, getting another stand like Tre, I thought I would get this http://www.amazon.com/Pearl-TH88I-H...8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1265956560&sr=8-4 ...but wouldn't i still need a bottom??

And I would change the title to this thread to make it sound less stupid, but I can't figure out how lol

Edit: just found this article http://www.ehow.com/how_2310195_mount-tom-toms-cymbal-stand.html

Pretty sure it's the same as my option 2, what Tre has.

Pretty sure it's the same as my option 2, what Tre has.

OK, three options.

1. Leave the set up as is, with your toms mounted on the stock tom holder which is mounted on the bass drum (as per your pics). You DON'T need to buy another tom arm for this set up. You've lost me there....you don't need to buy anything extra. Your pics show you have everything you need to leave it like this.

2. Mount the tom ON TO a cymbal stand. You'll need to buy a clamp ,http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibraltar-SCBGC-Grabber-Multi-Clamp?sku=446368, a single tom holder - which will have an L-arm (NOT like the Pearl tom arm you've linked....that won't work on your tom mounts). Gibraltar make a generic one. http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibraltar-Ball-Arm-L-Rod-Mount?sku=446271 (OR you can just use the one you have already). Put the clamp on the cymbal stand and then put the tom holder in the other end. Mount your tom, play around with the desired height/angle etc. You MAY have to move your cymbal stand to get the tom in the right position for you. So be it.

3. Mount the tom INTO a cymbal stand = Tre's set up. Buy a cymbal stand. Take the top sections out. Use the base of the stand and put your tom holder in it. Mount your tom,

Bob's your uncle, Fanny's your aunt....off you go.

I would leave it as it is, and add four more toms Like Neil Peart. He's much cooler than Tre Cool anyway.

Grunters, i don't have enough room for that

The reason I don't just keep it as it is is because the tom sits way too close to me. It's 14" and just awkward. But having the tom held by the bass is the studiest option probably, so that's why I bought this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002E4XV6/ref=oss_product

I figure if I'm lucky it will take up less room than my tom holder in the pictures (will let me have the tom mounted at least a few inches further back than it is now. And it'll look better.

If it's not any smaller Im pretty sure I could still do the connect to cymbal stand thing, but not the put into a stand option because the bar is too big to fit in the bottom of a stand.

BB, you could also rethink and use the now empty tom mount for a cymbal mount, maybe for your ride cymbal. There are adapters that go right over the arm and have a tilter on them for a cymbal. Might get rid of some weight in your hardware case, OR give you new options for cymbal mounting.

I use MINE for a ride cymbal, it puts it right next to the tom, and over the bass drum, right where I like it. And it CERTAINLY doesn't weigh in as much as the BOOM stand I would have to use if I DIDN'T use the tom mount.

If your tom is too close (no matter what) if it's on the kick, you'll need to either put it on a snare stand (which might be comfortable for you too) or, put the double L-arm mount you have in the base section of a Tama cymbal stand.

If you already bought the Yamaha piece, that's too bad. That mount won't work with your tom (nor will the Pearl arm as someone else has said).

You need an L-arm and the Yamaha mount has a straight post.

Unfortunately, you can't use it just mounted off a stand with a clamp and pointing "up" either, because of the tightening wing nut on top--won't work from the side either because there's not enough room between the shell an the straight arm.

Even if you got a Yamaha bracket to attach to the tom, that mount might not even fit the hole in your Tama kick, as Yamaha (used to anyway) makes it's parts to work within "the Yamaha brand", and sometimes their tube diameters are not the same as other brands.

Don't throw away any more money.

Your Tama tom mount in a Tama cymbal stand base will put the 14" tom where you want it if you want it over the kick-more in the middle of it like Tre' Cool.
Anything other than that, you will be fighting either the cymbal or the tom placement.
Otherwise, I'd just suggest putting the tom on a snare stand.
Quick, easy, and if the basket isn't clamped too tightly, you won't notice too much resonance loss.

Good luck with it!
