Default Powdercoating aluminum and effect on sound?

There's a guy selling rebuilt Supras and Acros on the two big auction sites. All have new hardware and appear to have appropriate badges. He powder coats them in flashy colors with some looking really tacky but others like a jewel. I'm considering buying a Supra but wonder if powder coating diminishes or adversely affects the aluminum sound I'm used to. Thoughts? JW

Hmmm.. I wouldn't say negatively changes the sound in all cases. But it will change it.

I had a Pearl brass free floater that was getting patina and rust. It was beyond repair. Rather than dump it I had an auto body guy powder coat it. It is a bit dryer than it was before, but still sounds like a gunshot with a nice crack, good body. Just a bit less ring.

I own a powder-coated VK magnesium snare which largely tracks with your description. As a general rule I find steel and related metalsí overtones far less desirable than brass, copper, aluminum etc. The powder coating on my VK drum tempers the overtones just enough. Itís a terrific sounding drum as a result of the powdercoating. The effects of powdercoating should be the same regardless of metal type: drier, more controlled overtones. The shell is not quite as vibrant.

I had my Yamaha Recording Custom Brass done in a matte black powder coat. They effect on the sound was minimal, and I use it on just about every gig I do now.
