Default Danny Carey vs Neil Peart

In my opinion Neil wins. Danny comes second. What do you guys think?

Hahaha ... someone will say it so I might as well ...

Very few of us at the forum believe in those kinds of comparisons and the whole "vs" thing because each drummer has his/her own qualities.

Having said that, we still flock to these threads like moths to a flame - usually to say how we don't don't believe in those kinds of comparisons and the whole "vs" thing because each drummer has his/her own qualities:)

For the record I love Danny Carey's playing but Neil doesn't do much for me, although there's no denying he's one of the elite drummers. Still, I find Tool's music much more inspiring than Rush's, and that's no doubt coloured my view.

So my final answer is Bill Bruford :-P

If we are talking about basketball, I think Carey will win. =P

If we are talking about drumming we would first need some sort of set of rules.

In the category "Heaviest Drumset", Danny wins with his solid metal drumshells, although it was a close thing.

In the category "Spiffiest Hat Collection", Neil walks away with this one for his myriad African hats, not to mention his trucker hats he wears at rehearsals.

In the category "Shortest Band Name", it's a tie.

So there you have it. Dead even in all the areas that matter.

...

...now then:

Truck Drivers vs. Service Writers.....

The Writer always wins ....

Unless the driver brings 2 for 3 McMuffins and Monster in the morning.

Parts Manager vs. Mechanics... Parts Manager ALWAYS wins, no exceptions !!

Now I REALLY must object. I loooooove beer (what Aussie doesn't??)....And I'm a firm believer that there are only two kinds of beer.....good and better. BUT, when it comes to Buds....I'll leave that one to you guys in the "Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave"....and you can have it.

Horrible tasting stuff!! I'm quite partial to your Coors....I'll happily drink your Millers. Gladly and willingly.....but that other stuff? Honestly.......what's with it??

Tastes like 'tap water, served with a light beer jus' for mine.

Wasn't it a typo? Didn't he mean to write BUTTwiper? ;)

Don't like spare ribs anyway, especially not from caged and tortured pigs. They are intelligent animals. Dad worked on a pig farm back in the old days when they were at least allowed to live in sties rather than those cages. He said they were aware of when they were going to be slaughtered and they'd all start screaming.

Miss Piggy rocks ...

When I was 13 I worked in an abbotoir for a while. I do not recall pigs screaming. Although they squealed a lot as a matter of course.

I have tried Budweisser beer. I don't mind it. It's kind of inoffensive and not memorable.

Speaking of beer, the local pub is offering FREE BEER tonight during the State of Origin rugby league match until the first point is scored. But the rain is falling so hard it may not be worth venturing out.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am unable to post anywhere else. So here goes. (if these posts turn up x 4, I would ask why I am being moderated in the first place and make no apology.)

Motivic drumset soloing.
Author. Terry O'Mahoney.

Recently I have begun using this book in order to teach students how to build creative solos based on ideas such as phrases played and built upon, call and response, logical construction etc etc. The above book has been useful in helping my endeavors.

The book is not for the basic beginner. I'd recommend at least a full 2 years of instruction or more before presenting it to the new drumset student. Intermediate drummers will benefit from this book having developed a degree of technical ability but unsure how to put it to use in solo form. More advanced working drummers may also find this text useful.

Although O'Mahoney plays the ideas on the CD in a jazz context, this should not limit the text to this or any one style. For example, rock drummers can use this text without any problem.

I highly recommend this book.

Possibly the easiest way for me to describe the contents is simply to list the contents chapter by chapter.

Chapter 1. Motivic development concepts.
1. Rhythmic motives.
2. Repetition.
3. Sequence.
4. Fragmentation.
5. Extension.
6. Augmentation.
7. Diminution.
8. Retrogade.
9. Inversion.
10. Embellishment.
11. Simplification.
12. Rhythmic displacement.
13. Summary.

Chapter 2. Musical concepts.
1. Orchestrate the melody.
2. Through-Composed solos vs. Motivic development.
3. Filler material.
4. Rolls.
5. Special effects.
6. Soloing over ostinato patterns.
7. Call and response.
8. Quoting.
9. Musical landmarks.
10. Odd groupings.
11. Polyrhythms.
12. Double time feel.
13. Varying rhythmic density.
14. Soloing in odd time signatures, (3/4, 5/4, 7/4)
15. Pick ups.
16. Ending solos.
17. Soloing over long musical forms.
18. Maintaining place in a song form.
19. Time solos vs. Outright solos.

Chapter 3. Additional concepts.
1. Abstract concepts/ideas.
2. Analyzing solos.
3. Sample drum solos.

Discography of motivic solos.

There ya go Swiss Mathias! :-)

Just quit smoking for the 100th time, PFOG. Had insomnia last night. Eventually gave up and got up again.

Wy, Dad told me about the pigs going crazy prior to slaughter many times (as he does with all his anecdotes these days). It had a big impact on him.

I did not know that Danny Carey and Neil Peart were in the WWF. I would have to pick Danny because he is younger, But on the other hand Neil has more wisdom. It does not matter those fights are always fake and rigged.

Pol, your father's experiences do not refute mine as mine do not refute his. I was not attempting to do so. I simply never saw this phenomynon during the months I worked there. Was simply remembering.

Okay Wy. I guess I was just pointing out that pigs are smart animals and I prefer my food not to be tortured before consumption.

Pigs rock.
