Practicing the chaal

Hey all

I have been incorporating some ethnic grooves into my daily routine. Lately it is the chaal.

I wanted to ask if anyone else out there had some groove ideas in and around Afican, Indian, Asian culture. Love to soak more of this stuff up!

Sometimes just hearing another music tradition can open up another avenue to play in. So just listen to as many types of music as possible. But at some point, really focus on one. It doesn't matter which one; West African, North Indian, South Indian, Brazilian, Korean, etc. But find a master player in one of those systems and try to become a student. You may think, "there are so many things to learn out there, I don't want to be pigeonholed into one thing." But what you will find, if you're fortunate enough to get a teacher like that, is that the differences (sound and style) are superficial. You'll develop discipline and get insight into how to break down challenges. You'll start to hear things differently.
