Jim Gordon drummer, did you know this?

I remember hearing this story a few years back. And since then I tell everyone about it when a songs comes on that has him in it. Very much agree, a damn shame. Absolutely love his stuff with Joe Cocker.

Let's remember the good stuff though.
Johnny Cash Show: Derek And The Dominos - It's Too Late

Hey thanks for that video from the Johnny Cash show. A great band that was. I would rate the Layla album one of the top 10 in Rock music.
But check out the clip at 1:17.....what's that hanging from Jim Gordon's snare? A rag, or a towel draped on the snare? To protect buzz or to mute?

Why not? He worked with everybody else. He was definitely one of my musical guiding lights. Even my old instructor, who used to play with Benny Goodman, liked Jim Keltner. This is the same guy who said that any drummer other than Buddy Rich was a lightweight but he definitely thought the world of Keltner. .

I read his profile on DW. There was a sentence in there that was really tough to read. His royalties from Layla help pay for his treatment.

Ya that is heartbreaking, but also uplifting on the other side of the coin. At least his contributions are financially rewarded, to help him later in life. Worse is he could have been ripped off like so many others from the era, and have nothing to show. The story goes that during studio 'downtime' Clapton heard him hammering on the (now famous) piano parts of Layla, and said "hey can we work that up together?" Gordon obliged.

His "Later In Life" was in a mental institution/jail. I hardly think his royalties got him much more than cartons of cigarettes.
