A real replacement job was probably Stephen Hawking. He was diagnosed with ALS/Lou Gehrig's disease in 1963. The average lifespan after contracting ALS is 2 to 5 years. He was given 2 years to live after the diagnosis by his doctors.

Makes you wonder...
